EDINBORO, Pa. (January 17, 2015) – The Edinboro men's basketball team shot 55.2 percent from the field and
Henri Wade-Chatman netted 20 points to help the Fighting Scots earn an 83-60 victory over visiting Clarion in a PSAC Western Division showdown on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro improved to 8-9 overall and 5-8 in PSAC play, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 6-9 on the season and 4-8 in the conference.
The Fighting Scots shot above 50 percent from the field for the third time this season, making 32 of 58 field goal attempts in the win.
Edinboro jumped out to an early 13-4 lead after a layup by
Casey Baker just under five minutes into the game.
Jaymon Mason tallied 16 points for Edinboro.The Fighting Scots then used a 19-7 run over the next 11 minutes, fueled by six points from
Casey Baker to give Edinboro its largest lead of the half of 21 points at 32-11 with 4:14 to play in the opening period. The Fighting Scots closed the run with a 6-0 spurt sparked by a jumper by
Jaymon Mason.
Clarion responded with a 10 unanswered points, forcing eight Edinboro turnovers in just over two minutes to cut the Fighting Scots' lead to 32-21 with 1:14 showing on the clock.
Edinboro scored five straight points to close the half, as
Sheldon Brogdon drained a 3-pointer and Baker converted a layup on a fast break to take a 37-21 lead into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles opened the half with a 5-0 run to shrink the Fighting Scots' advantage once again to 11 points at 37-26 with 18:46 remaining in the game. Edinboro would answer with a 6-0 run, capped by a Mason 3-pointer to build the Fighting Scots' lead back to 17 points at 43-26 at the 17:02 mark of the second half.
Three minutes later, a Brandon Williams layup cut the deficit to 15 points at 50-35 with 14:10 to play, before the Fighting Scots used a 9-0 run, ignited by a Wade-Chatman 3-pointer and capped by a
Quinn Lee Yaw dunk to put Edinboro ahead 59-35 with just under 12 minutes to play.
With the Fighting Scots owning an 18-point advantage at 73-55 at the 5:17 mark of the closing stanza, Edinboro used an 8-0 run keyed by five points from Mason to take its largest lead of the afternoon of 26 points at 81-55 with with 3:33 remaining in the contest.
The Fighting Scots connected on 62.5 percent (15 of 24) of field goals in the second half en route to the PSAC triumph.
Wade-Chatman led four Fighting Scots in double-figures with a game-high 20 points, connecting on 8 of 15 field goals and 4 of 8 shots from behind the arc. The junior guard also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a game-high seven assists on the day.
Jaymon Mason poured in 16 points on 3 of 8 shooting, while knocking down 9 of 9 shots at the charity stripe.
Casey Baker dropped in 12 points and was a perfect 6 of 6 from the field.
Sheldon Brogdon chipped in 11 points off the bench, sinking 3 of 7 shots from long range.
Will Marrow had nine points on 4 of 7 shooting, as well.
Sam Sealy-James led all players with a career-high nine rebounds for the Fighting Scots. The 6'9'' center also posted a career-best six blocked shots in the contest.
Kyheim Hall and Rob Agurs tallied 15 points apiece to pace Clarion, with Agurs contributing a team-high six boards. Brandon Williams and Darius Stevens added 10 points each off the bench for the Golden Eagles.
Sheldon Brogdon scored 11 points off the bench. Edinboro knocked down 36.4 percent (8 of 22) of shots from behind the arc, while the Fighting Scots were 78.6 percent (11 of 14) from the charity stripe.
Clarion was held to 35.1 percent (20 of 57) shooting in the game, including 30.8 percent (4 of 13) from long range. The Golden Eagles shot 61.5 percent (16 of 26) from the free throw line.
Edinboro outrebounded Clarion 40-28 and outscored the Golden Eagles 38-30 in the paint. Clarion held a 21-13 advantage in points off turnovers.
After Clarion knotted the game at 2-2 just over a minute into the contest, a jumper by
Casey Baker gave the Fighting Scots the lead for good.
Edinboro has now has a week off to prepare for a PSAC road contest at Pitt-Johnstown next Saturday, January 24. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. from Johnstown, Pa.
