INDIANA, Pa. (January 14, 2015) - The Edinboro women's basketball team could not sustain its hot shooting to open the game in an 86-60 loss at No. 17 Indiana (Pa.) on Wednesday night. The Fighting Scots loss is their first against the Crimson Hawks in their last 11 meetings. Edinboro falls to 11-5 overall and 8-4 in the PSAC West while IUP improves to 14-1 and 10-1 in conference.
The Fighting Scots jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with all six points coming from
Aignee' Freeland. Edinboro extended its lead to as much as 19-12 with 13:47 to play. The Scots shot 9-for-11 over this opening stretch.
The rest of the first half would belong to Indiana (Pa.). The Crimson Hawks would outscore Edinboro 27-7 from the 13:31 mark until halftime to take a 39-26 lead into the break. The Fighting Scots shot 3-for-14 with seven turnovers over this span. IUP closed the first half on a 13-2 run.
Edinboro shot 12-for-28 (42.9 percent) from the floor in the first half and 2-for-4 on 3-pointers. Indiana (Pa.) shot 17-for-32 (53.1 percent) from the field over the first twenty minutes and 1-for-7 on 3-pointers. IUP also outrebounded the Fighting Scots 20-12.
Freeland opened the second half with four points in under a minute to cut the lead back to single digits down 39-30 with 19:06 showing on the clock. The Crimson Hawks would recapture a double-digit lead 10 seconds later when Lindsay Stamp made a layup and would lead by at least 11 points the rest of the game.
The Fighting Scots shot 25-for-62 (40.3 percent) for the game and 4-for-10 (40 percent) on 3-pointers. The Crimson Hawks finished 33-for-59 (55.9 percent) from the floor and 7-for-17 (41.2 percent) from beyond the arc.
The 86 points given up by Edinboro was the most an opposing team scored against the Scots this season. It was also the first time the Fighting Scots allowed an opposing team to shoot over 50 percent against them.
Indiana (Pa.) pulled down 39 rebounds to Edinboro's 28.
Valerie Majewski led all Fighting Scots with 17 points on 7-for-14 from the floor, 1-for-3 on 3-pointers, and 2-for-3 at the free throw line. The senior guard also had three steals.
Laurel Lindsay finished the game with 15 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists. The graduate student guard/forward shot 6-for-15 from the field including 2-for-3 on 3-pointers and 1-for-1 at the charity stripe. Lindsay took sole possession of 28
th in school history in scoring (1,016 career points) breaking a tie she held with Sheilah Collins. The South Park, Pa. native also passed Karen Urey for sixth all-time in career assists. Lindsay now has 448 helpers, two assists shy of passing Samantha Reimer for fifth all-time.
Freeland paced Edinboro with 10 points at halftime and finished with 14 points and tied her season-low with one rebound. The only other time this season the junior forward/center pulled down one rebound was against Virginia State on December 7, 2014. Freeland finished 7-for-13 shooting and missed both of her free throw attempts.
Lauren Hippo rounded out the group of Fighting Scots to score in double figures. The junior guard finished with 11 points on 4-for-7 from the floor, 1-for-3 on 3-pointers, and 2-for-2 at the free throw line.
Stamp led all players with 22 points and nine rebounds. The PSAC's leading scorer shot 9-for-14 on the night, 1-for-3 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Ashley Stoner and Leslie Stapleton were the only other two Crimson Hawks to score in double figures. Stoner finished with 19 points and seven rebounds while Stapleton score 12 points.
Marita Mathe had a game-high nine assists while contributing six points.
Edinboro's next game is on Saturday, December 17. The Fighting Scots host Clarion which lost its 12
th straight game earlier this evening 53-41 versus Mercyhurst. Tip-off against the 1-15 Golden Eagles (0-11 in the PSAC) is set for 1:00 p.m.
