Edinboro’s Late Rally Falls Short at Kutztown 73-71

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (January 3, 2015) – The Edinboro men's basketball team's last-minute rally fell short on Saturday afternoon, as the Fighting Scots suffered a 73-71 loss to host Kutztown in a PSAC Crossover contest at Keystone Arena. Edinboro moved to 6-6 overall and 3-5 in PSAC play with the loss, and Kutztown boosted its records to 9-5 and 6-2, respectively.
 
After a Tyler Brooks dunk gave Golden Bears a 10-point lead at 70-60 with 1:02 to play in the game, the Fighting Scots mounted their comeback attempt.   
 
Jaymon Mason knocked down a 3-pointer just four seconds later, cutting the deficit to seven points at 70-63 with 58 seconds remaining.

Kutztown's Howard Sellars hit one of two free throw attempts after an Edinboro foul, giving the hosts a 71-63 lead with 40 seconds to play.
 
Sheldon Brogdon missed a 3-pointer on the next Fighting Scot possession and the Golden Bears secured the rebound, but Mason would steal the ball right back from Kutztown. This led to a Casey Baker layup to shrink the Kutztown lead to six at 71-65 with 18 seconds remaining.
 
Edinboro would foul once again a second later, and Kutztown's Anthony Selby connected on one of two shots from the charity stripe to put the Golden Bears ahead 72-65.
 
Brogdon answered with a 3-pointer with seven seconds to go, minimizing the Kutztown advantage to 72-68.
 
The Fighting Scots would foul instantly, sending Golden Bears' leading scorer Tynell Fortune to the free throw line for two shots, where the senior guard would make one of two shots to give Kutztown a 73-68 lead with seven seconds to play in the contest.
 
Brogdon drained another 3-pointer, but with just one second showing on the clock, as the Fighting Scots' late rally fell just two points short.
 
All told, Edinboro closed the game on an 11-3 run, with all 11 points coming in the final 58 seconds.
 
Henri Wade-Chatman led four Fighting Scots in double-figures with a game-high 23 points, shooting 7 of 16 from the field in the game, while making 3 of 6 shots from long range and 6 of 7 from the charity stripe. The Pittsburgh native has scored 20-or-more points on five occasions this season.
 
Mason tallied 16 points for Edinboro and was a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line. Brogdon finished with 13 points off the bench on 4 of 9 shooting, including 3 of 7 from behind the arc.
 
Tommy Scales posted his first career double-double, dropping in 11 points on 5 of 7 field goals to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench. The 6'8'' junior's performance marked the first double-double of the season for the Fighting Scots.
 
Fortune paced the Golden Bears with 22 points, while Josh Johnson and Sellars each added 12 points, respectively. Selby chipped in 10 points and pulled down a team-high eight boards for Kutztown.
 
The Golden Bears shot 46.2 percent (24 of 52) for the game, while Edinboro made 40.2 percent (23 of 57) of field goals in the game.

Both teams found success from behind the arc, as Kutztown made 60.0 percent (9 of 15) of 3-pointers and the Fighting Scots shot 50.0 percent (8 of 16) from long range.
 
Edinboro connected on 85.0 percent (17 of 20) from the charity stripe, while the Golden Bears shot 59.3 percent (16 of 27) on free throws.
 
The Fighting Scots bested Kutztown in the rebounding column 36-32.
 
The Golden Bears dished out 17 assists as a team, while Edinboro matched a season-low with six assists.
 
Kutztown built its lead to as many as 12 points in the second half on two occasions, the ladder coming at the 8:53 mark.
 
The Fighting Scots' largest advantage of the contest was four points at 14-10 with 12:55 remaining in the first half after a Wade-Chatman 3-pointer.
 
A Sellars 3-pointer with just over six minutes to play would give the Golden Bears a 25-23 lead, an advantage Kutztown would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
 
Edinboro returns right back to action tomorrow, as the Fighting Scots travel to Mansfield. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Decker Gymnasium in Mansfield, Pa.
