MANSFIELD, Pa. (January 4, 2015) – Trailing by two points at 66-64 in the closing seconds of a PSAC Crossover matchup on Sunday afternoon,
Jaymon Mason's potential game-tying layup was partially blocked, as the Edinboro men's basketball team fell to host Mansfield at Decker Gymnasium. The Fighting Scots dropped to 6-7 on the season, including a 3-6 ledger in PSAC play. The Mountaineers improved to 6-7 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
All six of Edinboro's conference losses have come by a combined 20 points. The Fighting Scots' largest defeat was by just six points at the hands of California (Pa.) on November 22.
On Sunday,
Tommy Scales knocked down a pair of free throws to give Edinboro a 64-61 advantage with 2:41 to play in the game.
Over a minute later, a layup by Mansfield's Thomas More cut the Fighting Scots' lead to 64-63 at the 1:35 mark of the second half.
14After Edinboro missed a pair of 3-pointers on their next possession and Mansfield's Joe Bell secured the rebound on the ladder miss, the Mountaineers took a 65-64 lead on a Charles Pemberton layup with 19 seconds to play.
With a chance to take the lead, the Fighting Scots turned the ball over with six seconds showing on the clock, before fouling Moore and sending him to the charity stripe for a pair of free throws.
Moore would miss the first shot, but nail the second free throw to give Mansfield a 66-64 lead with four seconds remaining in the game.
Mason took the ball the length of the floor, before his layup attempt was blocked by Pemberton and Moore grabbed the rebound, as the Mountaineers secured the two-point victory.
Henri Wade-Chatman led all scorers with 29 points, one point shy of a career-high. He connected on 12 of 21 field goals, including 2 of 6 3-pointers to go along with 3 of 4 free throws. The 6'2'' guard matched a team-high with five rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists, as well.
Scales was the only other Fighting Scot to score in double-figures, finishing with 11 points off the bench, while also pulling down five boards.
Bell paced Mansfield with 21 points, followed by Moore with 19 markers. Pemberton added 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds, including seven offensive boards for the Mountaineers. The trio combined for 54 of Mansfield's 66 total points.
Edinboro outshot the Mountaineers 45.3 percent (24 of 53) to 43.1 percent (22 of 51) in the game.
Mansfield bested the Fighting Scots from behind the arc, shooting 42.1 percent (8 of 19) from long range, while Edinboro was 30.8 percent (4 of 13) on 3-point attempts.
The Fighting Scots shot 75.0 percent (12 of 16) from the free throw line, compared to Mansfield shooting 66.7 percent (14 of 21) from the charity stripe.
Edinboro outrebounded the Mountaineers 33-30 in the contest.
Mansfield capitalized on Fighting Scot miscues, scoring 22 points off Edinboro's 16 turnovers.
The Fighting Scots led for 31:58 of the contest, which featured 13 lead changes and six ties.
In the first half, Wade-Chatman knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:45 to play in the opening period to give Edinboro a six-point lead at 24-18.
The Mountaineers responded with a 10-3 run to close the half, buoyed by eight points by Bell, as Mansfield held a 28-27 advantage at the break.
Trailing by one point at 38-37 with 14:07 remaining in the game, the Fighting Scots used an 11-4 run capped by a
Quinn Lee Yaw jumper to take their largest lead of the game of eight points at 48-40 with just under 10 minutes to play.
Edinboro returns home to face Lock Haven on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse in the Fighting Scots' final PSAC Crossover contest of the season. Edinboro has won six consecutive games against the Bald Eagles and will look to snap a two-game skid.
