KUTZTOWN, Pa. (January 3, 2015) – The Edinboro women's basketball team won its sixth game in a row and first game of the 2015 calendar year on Saturday afternoon 81-69 at Kutztown.
Lauren Hippo and
Laurel Lindsay each scored 20 points to lead the Fighting Scots. The Scots improve to 9-3 overall this season and 6-2 in the PSAC while the Golden Bears fall to 4-7 overall and 3-5 in conference.
Each team went on small runs early in the first half and then traded field goals from 8:26 remaining in the first half until 3:08 showing on the clock when the Fighting Scots scored 12 unanswered points. Hippo scored four points during that stretch while
Valerie Majewski and
Hope Mancini each hit a 3-pointer. Brianna Morales would make a 3-pointer before the conclusion of the half to make it a 42-26 advantage for Edinboro at the break.
The Fighting Scots shot 16-for-32 (50 percent) from the floor including 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) on 3-pointers in the first half compared to the Golden Bears 11-for-34 (32.4 percent) from the field and 3-for-8 (37.5 percent) on 3-pointers.
Kutztown chipped away at the lead in the second half. The Golden Bears cut the lead to single digits with 14:08 remaining in the game when Advia Campbell made a layup to make it a 49-40 game.
Edinboro would push the lead back up to 10 points. Kutztown responded with four points to make it a two possession game, trailing 56-50 with 8:45 to play.
That would be the closest the Golden Bears would get for the rest of the game.
Maggie Moore made a layup with 8:15 to play which sparked a 10-0 run. Lindsay and Hippo each added a 3-pointer while
Anastasia Riabchenko concluded the stretch with a layup to give Edinboro a 66-50 run with 6:23 remaining.
Edinboro would lead by double-digits the rest of the game. Freeland and Hippo scored the final ten points for the Fighting Scots.
The Scots shot 28-for-59 (47.5 percent) from the field and 10-for-18 (55.6 percent) on 3-pointers. Kutztown finished 28-for-67 (41.8 percent) shooting and 3-for-11 (27.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
Hippo reached 20 points for the second straight game and double figures for the fifth straight game. The junior guard/forward finished 6-for-10 from the floor, 2-for-4 on 3-pointers, and 6-for-6 on free throws. Hippo added four rebounds and a career-high four steals.
Lindsay's 20 points was her highest scoring total this season. The graduate student guard/forward is now at 968 career points. She is 32 points shy of becoming the 29
th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Lindsay shot 5-for-16 from the field, 4-for-8 on 3-pointers, and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe while dishing out nine assists and pulling down five rebounds.
Freeland posted her third double-double of the season and 21
st of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The junior forward/center shot 5-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-4 on free throws.
Kutztown had five players score in double figures with Campbell leading with 13 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.
Nicole Donahue scored 12 points off the bench on 6-for-8 shooting. Alyssa Bonenberger and Kelsey Watson each scored 11 points and Watson neared a double-double with nine rebounds. Natalya Lee finished with 10 points.
Edinboro now travels to Mansfield for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off tomorrow. The Mounties fell to 1-11 overall and 0-8 in the PSAC East after losing 75-65 to Slippery Rock earlier today. The Fighting Scots lead the overall series 14-2 and have won five straight games
