Fighting Scots Win Fourth Game in a Row with 68-59 Victory at California (Pa.)

CALIFORNIA, Pa. (January 31, 2015) – The Edinboro men's basketball team won its fourth consecutive game with a 68-59 triumph at California (Pa.) in a PSAC Western Division matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center in California, Pa. The Fighting Scots boosted their record to 11-9 overall and 8-8 in conference play. The Vulcans dropped their third straight game, falling to 12-9 and 8-8, respectively.
 
Holding a 29-23 halftime lead, Edinboro opened the second half on an 8-2 run capped by a Henri Wade-Chatman layup to take a 37-25 lead with 17 minutes remaining in the contest.
 
Two minutes later, a pair of Khalil Jabbie free throws cut the Fighting Scots' advantage to 10 points at 39-29 at the 15:06 mark of the closing period. Edinboro answered with a 10-4 run fueled by four points apiece from Will Marrow and Jaymon Mason to take its largest lead of the evening of 16 points at 49-33 with 10:49 to play in the game.

The Vulcans responded with a 14-4 run of their own to shrink the deficit to six points at 53-47 with just over five minutes showing on the clock.
 
California would minimize the deficit to five points on three occasions in the final five minutes of play, the last coming with 49 seconds to play after a Jabbie jumper. However, that is as close as the Vulcans would come, as Casey Baker scored four consecutive points to close the game, sealing the 68-59 victory for the Fighting Scots.
 
Wade-Chatman paced Edinboro with 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting. The PSAC's leading scorer, he made 2-of-4 shots from behind the arc and was 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.
 
Mason tallied 13 points and dished out a game-high four assists. Marrow finished with 11 points, scoring in double-figures in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.
 
Tommy Scales contributed nine points and eight rebounds, while Casey Baker grabbed eight boards, as well.
 
Khalil Jabbie led all scorers with 22 markers, connecting on 6-of-15 field goals and 9-of-10 free throws. Jake Jacubec added 11 points, while Richard Smith pulled down a game-high 19 rebounds.
 
The Fighting Scots shot 43.4 percent (26-of-60) for the game, including a 50.0 percent (15-of-30) in the second half. Edinboro made 31.3 percent (5-of-16) of 3-pointers and 55.0 percent (11-of-20) of shots from the free throw line.
 
California connected on 33.9 percent (19-of-56) of field goals, 19.0 percent (4-of-21) from long range and 68.0 percent (17-of-25) from the charity stripe.
 
The Fighting Scots edged the Vulcans on the boards 41-40 and held a 28-18 advantage on points in the paint.
 
Saturday's victory marked Edinboro's first win on the road at California since the 2011-12 season, when the Fighting Scot defeated the Vulcans by a score of 68-64.
 
In the first half, a Wade-Chatman jumper at the 9:52 mark putting Edinboro on top 14-12, giving the Fighting Scots the lead for good. The junior guard's basket ignited an 8-0 Edinboro spurt which included a Mike Beck 3-pointer and was capped by a Marrow fast-break layup to put the Fighting Scots ahead by 8 points at 20-12 with 5:01 to play in the opening period.
 
Edinboro would take a six-point advantage into the break. The Fighting Scots are now 9-1 when leading at the half.
 
Edinboro returns home to host Gannon on Wednesday night. The Golden Knights sit in first place in the PSAC West after a 55-46 triumph over crosstown rival Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off between the Fighting Scots and Gannon is slated for 7:30 p.m. from McComb Fieldhouse.
