EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 21, 2015) – Unless the two teams meet in the postseason, the Edinboro women's soccer team will have to wait another year to try to end its losing streak to Slippery Rock. The Rock used a second period goal to gain a 1-0 victory in a PSAC women's soccer match at Sox Harrison Stadium on Wednesday night.
The loss drops Edinboro to 9-6-0 overall and 8-5-0 in the PSAC, while Slippery Rock improved to 9-5-1 and 8-4-1, respectively. It was a key contest also in terms of postseason possibilities after the NCAA announced its first set of regional rankings earlier today, with Edinboro ranked fifth in the Atlantic Region and SRU ninth.
Edinboro has not beaten Slippery Rock since 2009, showing an 0-4-2 record against The Rock since then.
Scoring opportunities were at a premium in the first half, with both teams failing on one good opportunity apiece.
Sarah BaskeySlippery Rock finally found the back of the net early in the second half. Taylor Sweeney's attempt rebounded off an Edinboro defender to Tess Keeley, who fired a low shot into the right corner from 25 yards out for her fourth goal of the season.
From there Slippery Rock turned defensive, although the Fighting scots pressured SRU goalkeeper Charlotte Elrod. The best chance for the Scots came with just over 13 minutes to play, as
Halle Hammer's shot from 30 yards out skimmed just over the top of the goal.
Edinboro ended with a 10-5 advantage in shots, with
Sarah Baskey recording one save. Elrod had four saves.
The Fighting Scots will play their final home game of the regular season on Saturday, October 24, hosting East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m. Another key PSAC match, it will begin with five seniors being honored prior to the match.
