Edinboro Falls to 13th-Ranked Slippery Rock, 52-10, on Senior Day

EDINBORO, Pa. (October 31, 2015) – Halloween 2015 turned out to be a scary experience for the Edinboro football team. The Fighting Scots had hoped to treat the Senior Day crowd at Sox Harrison Stadium to an upset of 13th-ranked Slippery Rock, but instead they got a first-hand glimpse of one of the most prolific offenses in Division II. The end result was a 52-10 defeat as Edinboro remained winless at 9-0 overall and 0-6 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock boosted its winning streak to five games in a row while improving to 8-1 and 5-1, respectively.

Slippery Rock came into the game averaging 44.8 ppg., good for third in Division II, along with seventh in the country in total offense (506.1 ypg.). They were also tenth nationally in rushing offense (273.0 ypg.).

An outmanned Edinboro defense was unable to do anything to diminish those totals. Slippery Rock finished with 600 yards on 90 plays, the seventh-highest figure ever by an opponent against Edinboro. In addition, SRU ran for 377 yards, which ranks fifth by an opponent.

Edinboro, meanwhile, ended the day with 215 yards in total offense, just bettering last week's season-low total of 206 yards vs. Mercyhurst. That included 44 yards on the ground. After driving 75 yards late in the first half to cut the deficit to 31-10, the Fighting Scots were limited to one first down and 57 total yards in the final thirty minutes, while crossing midfield just once.

Darren Massey

The lone bright spot for Edinboro on the day was Darren Massey's 15 receptions. The junior wide receiver broke his own school record for single-game receptions with 15 catches. He previously caught 13 passes in the season opener against Saint Joseph's.

Slippery Rock's no-huddle, fast-paced offense scored in lightning-quick fashion all afternoon. The longest of the eight scoring drives took just 2 minutes, 39 seconds, and five of the seven touchdown marches were less than two minutes.

The Rock scored on its first two possessions, taking the opening kickoff and going 68 yards in 11 plays and 2 minutes, 39 seconds. Shamar Greene did the honors on a two-yard run.

Following a three-and-out by Edinboro, Jaimire Dutrieuille capped a 10-play, 55-yard drive with a two-yard run. Slippery Rock led 14-0 at the 8:05 mark of the first quarter.

Edinboro would get on the scoreboard following an exchange of fumbles, with Ricky Bailey forcing Greene to fumble, with Victor Hudson recovering at the SRU 14.

Edinboro would be unable to move the ball, but Austin Reese came in and booted a 28-yard field goal to cut the margin to 14-3 with 2:57 left in the quarter.

The Rock came right back with an eight-play, 75-yard march. Dutrieuille covered the final 32 yards on a pass from Dante Nania, with the first quarter ending at 21-3.

Slippery Rock would boost the lead to 31-3 in the second quarter on a three-yard run by Greene and a 34-yard field goal by Andrew Huska. The field goal was set up by an interception by Deonte Fleming, returned to the EU 20. SRU had two touchdowns called back on the series due to penalties before the Edinboro defense limited them to three points.

Edinboro took the ensuing kickoff and put together its most impressive drive of the day, largely on the efforts of Jake Sisson. The sophomore either passed or ran on 13 of the 14 plays. He culminated the 75-yard march with a one-yard touchdown pass to Alex Caratelli with six seconds remaining. Caratelli made a leaping catch in the right side of the end zone for his seventh touchdown of the season. That is tied for 12th-in season touchdown receptions.

Edinboro opened the second half with three straight incompletions. Reese's punt was returned 64 yards by Dutrieuille for an apparent touchdown, but it was negated by a penalty, marking the fourth touchdown called back by a yellow flag in the game for SRU.

It didn't matter. Taking over at the Edinboro 40, The Rock was back in the end zone five plays later. Nania completed a 12-yard pass to Marcus Johnson for the touchdown with 13:08 left in the third quarter.

SRU scored on its next possession, as well. Nania threw his third touchdown pass of the afternoon, a six-yarder to Cornelius Raye as the lead grew to 45-10 with 10:01 left in the third quarter.

Slippery Rock would add its final score on the first play of the fourth quarter, with backup running back Julian Durden rushing for his 15th-touchdown on a 26-yard burst. That ended a five-play, 72-yard drive.

Massey's 15 receptions covered 73 yards. He also moved within striking distance of his own season record of 80 catches, set last year. He has 73 catches, the second-highest season total. He also moved into sixth place in career receiving yards with 1,933.

Sisson was battered all day by the SRU pass rush, but was sacked just twice while completing 23 of a career-high 44 attempts for 171 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He also was Edinboro's leading rusher with 19 yards.
Sisson has thrown for 1,960 yards, good for 12th in a season. Unfortunately, the interception was his 16th of the season, tying him with Hall of Famer Chris Hart. Ironically, Hart was in attendance as an honoree captain today.

Reese was called on to punt 11 times, one shy of the school record. In addition, freshman Mitch Thomas returned six kickoffs for 163 yards. He now has 628 yards in kickoff returns, the fifth-highest season total. He has also tied the school record for kickoff returns in a season with 28.

SRU had a pair of 100-yard rushers in Durden with 113 yards on 11 carries and Greene with 105 yards on 18 rushes. It marked the first time an opponent had a pair of 100-yard rushers since Blooomsburg's Franklyn Quiteh and Dai'shon Munger did it in 2013.

Nania completed 16 of 29 passes for 169 yards with 3 TDs and an INT. Raye had 4 catches for 57 yards, with Dutrieuille also hauling in 4 passes for 56 yards.

Edinboro wraps up the regular season with a pair of road games, beginning next Saturday, November 7. The Fighting Scots will play for the first time at Seton Hill.
