The Road to the Atlantic Subregional
PSAC Quarterfinals -- Edinboro 1, Kutztown 0
After singing the national anthem prior to the PSAC quarterfinal match,
Alex Brown propelled Edinboro into the semifinals with the lone goal at Sox Harrison Stadium. Two weeks earlier, Edinboro and Kutztown met on a snowy afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium, with the Fighting Scots prevailing 4-1. This time around the players were bathed in sunshine and 70 degree temperatures. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half, with Edinboro outshooting the Golden Bears, 6-2. Edinboro had the best opportunity to score, but
Ashley Mutkus' shot hit the crossbar in the 26th minute. Both teams had early chances in the second half, including a sprawling save by Edinboro goalkeeper
Sarah Baskey on a long shot by Diana Malanga in the 65th minute. A minute later Kutztown's Alaina Curry just missed to the right side on a long shot that went wide. Edinboro finally put a crooked number on the board at the 66:38 mark. Brown, a junior, blasted a shot past Deanna Messner from 25 yards out into the top left corner to give the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead. It was Brown's fifth goal of the season. The Edinboro defense did the rest, as they held Kutztown off the board to come away with their sixth shutout of the season. Baskey, a sophomore, improved to 11-4-0 with her fifth shutout, recording four saves. Edinboro held a 14-7 advantage in shots.
PSAC Semifinals -- Edinboro 3, Gannon 1
Edinboro earned a spot in the PSAC Championship game for the first time with an upset of top-seeded and fifth-ranked Gannon. The Fighting Scots prevailed, 3-1, behind a pair of goals from
Alex Brown at windswept McConnell Family Stadium in Friday's semifinals. Gannon defeated Edinboro, 4-0, in the regular season meeting between the two. While the wind was once again howling from one end of the field to the other, this time Edinboro had the wind in the first half. The Fighting Scots were able to take advantage with Brown's goal at 23:42. Minutes earlier they gained a huge advantage when Gannon's Becca Albert received a red card in the 18th minute, forcing the Lady Knights to play a man down the rest of the way. Gannon had the first true opportunity to score when a long blast from the right side hit the right post. Edinboro kept the pressure on Gannon goalkeeper Shannon Differ and finally broke through when Brown took a beautiful feed between two defenders from
Jansen Hartmann and fired a shot from 20 yards out past Differ. Gannon had the wind in the second half, and while the Lady Knights were able to score once with the wind, Edinboro notched two goals going into it as Gannon was forced to push up playing from behind. Hartmann gave Edinboro a 2-0 lead at 60:55 She dribbled past a Gannon defender on the far right side, and with an almost impossible angle, her shot deflected off Differ and squeezed into the corner of the goal. It was Hartmann's 12th goal of the season. Edinboro had an excellent opportunity to go up by three goals three minutes later on a Brown breakaway, but Differ denied her. Brown had another breakaway attempt in the 72nd minute, with Differ again equal to the challenge. Back came Gannon, with a free kick deflected by Baskey. It rebounded to Valloud but she was unable to redirect it into the net, hitting a shot high and wide. Finally, Gannon's pressure paid off as the Fighting Scots turned the ball over in their end. Ally Sharpe scored to make it 2-1 at 74:29, with Kaitlyn Kissell and Mani Brueckner assisting. Edinboro had two more opportunities to score, and while Differ made an outstanding play at the top of the box on a breakaway by
Ashley Mutkus with 13 minutes to play, the Scots second chance found the back of the net. Brown did the honors again, as the junior forward scored her seventh goal of the season and third of the PSAC playoffs at 80:15. Again it came on a breakaway for the Scots, as she converted on a two-on-one, with Mutkus on her left. Her shot went past a diving Differ into the upper left corner for a 3-1 lead. Edinboro withstood a barrage of Gannon shots in the second half after holding 10-6 advantage at the half. The Lady Knights fired 17 shots to Edinboro's six, for a 23-16 advantage in the game. Baskey recorded 11 save while picking up her 12th win in goal. That ties her for the school record with
Meghan Kelly, who won 12 games in 2012 and '13.
PSAC Championship Game --East Stroudsburg 2, Edinboro 1 ot
East Stroudsburg's Shea Neal scored the game-winning goal with 2 minutes, 1 second remaining in overtime to end Edinboro's hopes for a first-ever PSAC championship. The Warriors won their second straight title, a 2-1 win in overtime, in the PSAC Women's Soccer Championship Game at Gannon's McConnell Family Stadium. Edinboro is now 14-7-0 while East Stroudsburg is 11-6-2. The loss snapped the Fighting Scots' five-game winning streak. East Stroudsburg made an unlikely run to win the PSAC's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. The Warriors came in as the number seven seed, but upset second-seed West Chester and third-seed Slippery Rock to reach the finals. The two teams entered overtime tied at 1-1 following a scoreless second half. Edinboro controlled the action throughout the overtime period and had two chances to score.
Jansen Hartmann's hard shot from the far right hand corner was off the mark. Less than a minute later,
Nicole Chabot had an open look but could not convert. The Fighting Scots lost starting forwards Mutkus and Brown to injury late in regulation. East Stroudsburg took advantage of its lone scoring opportunity in overtime. Neal took a perfect feed on a breakaway from Alex Pickett and beat goalkeeper
Sarah Baskey with a shot to the left post, providing the Warriors their second straight conference title. Making its first appearance in the PSAC Championship Game, Edinboro opened the scoring with a goal at 15:44 by
Shannon Regan, the first goal of her career. The junior defender headed in a corner kick from Brown past East Stroudsburg goalkeeper Jules Harris. The Fighting Scots kept the pressure on Harris, with a crossing pass from Hartmann to Brown misfiring just thirty seconds after the initial goal. ESU started pressuring Edinboro in the second half of the first period, and would actually grab an 8-7 lead in shots at the half. A pair of headers just missed for the Warriors. Pickett missed on the first one, with Baskey coming up with the save. The second came in the 21st minute, with a header by Neal going wide. The Warriors finally broke through on Baskey in the 31st minute. She was able to sprawl and stop a shot by Brielyn Hackett, but the ball rolled to her right and Pickett gathered it in and tapped the ball into the left corner of the net to toe the match at 1-1 at the 30:23 mark. Baskey came up with the save of the match late in the period. Molly Vicari blasted a shot from ten yards out that the sophomore goalkeeper made a diving save on in the 35th minute. Edinboro ended the match with a 19-18 advantage in shots. Baskey finished with 5 saves, while Harris had 6.
