INSTITUTE, WV. (November 13, 2015) – The Edinboro University women's basketball team opened up the 2015 campaign with a win over Charleston (WV), 82-66, in the first game of the Earl Lloyd PSAC-MEC Classic. Five Fighting Scots scored in double digits, with three recording double-doubles.
Senior
Aignee' Freeland recorded a team-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, while junior
Maggie Moore totaled 15 points and a team-leading 11 boards. Fellow junior
Katie Fischer totaled 12 points and dished out 11 assists.
Senior Lauen Hippo totaled 18 points, while freshman
Melanie Lindsey contributed ten points off the bench.
Fischer opened the scoring for Edinboro with a jumper to put the Scots up 2-0 in the early going. A put-back by Moore gave Edinboro a four point lead. Monet Saunders got the Golden Eagles on the board with a jumper a minute and a half into the game. Darian Apperson tied the game up with a put-back before Chyress Lockhart gave Charleston a three point lead about halfway through the first quarter. A three-pointer by Fischer sparked a Fighting Scot rally that ended the first quarter on a 16-5 run to give Edinboro a 25-16 lead.
Saunders scored the first seven points of the second quarter for the Golden Eagles to help cut the Edinboro lead to just two. The Fighting Scots responded with a 16-4 run, including two Hippo three-pointers to give Edinboro a 43-29 halftime lead.
Maggie Moore led the Scots with 11 reboundsAt the half, Hippo led all scorers with 12 points. Moore had an extremely productive first half for the Scots, totaling eight points with seven boards and two blocked shots. Fischer had seven points and seven assists in the first two quarters. The Fighting Scots shot 47.1 percent (16-34) from the field and were 5-14 from beyond the arc. Saunders led the scoring for the Golden Eagles with nine points on 4-9 shooting. The Fighting Scots held a 24-12 rebound advantage, including a 10-4 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Moore opened the scoring in the second half with a layup, assisted by Fischer, to give Edinboro a 16-point lead. Freeland scored the next three baskets for the Fighting Scots to push the lead to 51-35. A layup by Freeland gave the Fighting Scots a 23-point lead, their biggest of the game, in the closing minutes of the third. Freeland totaled ten of her 23 points in the third quarter as Edinboro scored 18 points in the paint to take a 65-46 lead into the final period of play.
Mya Walker opened the scoring in the final period for the Golden Eagles with a three-pointer less than a minute into play. The Golden Eagles tried to rally, scoring the next five baskets of the game, but Edinboro clamped down holding Charleston to just four points in the final 4:25 of regulation
The Fighting Scots shot lights-out in the second half, shooting 60 percent (15-25) from the field. Edinboro continued to control the glass, posting a 17-11 rebound margin in the second half. Charleston shot 42.9 percent (12-28) from the field, but hit just 2-13 three-pointers in the second half.
Edinboro wraps up the weekend on Sunday, November 15 when they play host West Virginia State. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
