Fighting Scots Improve to 2-0 with 55-51 Win at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, WV. (November 15, 2015) – The Edinboro University women's basketball team used a late surge to hand West Virginia State a 55-51 defeat in the final game of the PSAC-MEC Challenge. The Fighting Scots went on a 7-0 run in the final 1:03 of play to clinch their second victory of the season. While Edinboro is now 2-0, West Virginia State fell to 1-1.  
 
Senior Aignee' Freeland recorded a team-high 22 points, including scoring five in the last 1:03 of play to close out the game.  A clutch steal with 30 seconds left highlighted a solid game put together off the bench by freshman Cheniya Sharpe. Sharpe totaled nine points with 12 rebounds, 9 of which were offensive.
 
Junior Katie Fischer recorded her second straight double-double with 11 points and ten boards. Fischer fell just three assists short of a triple-double, finishing with seven.
 
Freeland opened the scoring in the game to put the Scots up 2-0 in the early going. A put-back by Moore gave Edinboro a four point lead. Shealyn Shafer got West Virginia State on the board with a jumper about two minutes into the game. After a fastbreak layup by Freeland to give the Scots a two-point lead, the Yellow Jackets closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to bring a 16-10 lead into the second.
 
Fischer scored the first basket of the second quarter for the Fighting Scots to help cut the Yellow Jackets lead to four. After a jumper by Shafer to push the lead back to six, the Fighting Scots responded with a 7-0 run, including two Lindsey Jahn layups to take a one-point lead. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter to enter half tied 28-28.

Aignee' Freeland led all scorers with 22 points
At the half, Freeland led all scorers with 12 points. Fischer had a productive first half for the Scots, totaling four points with six boards and three assists. The Fighting Scots shot 36.7 percent (11-30) from the field and were 6-8 at the charity stripe. Aurreshae Hines led the scoring for the Yellow Jackets with nine points on 3-5 shooting. The Fighting Scots held a 22-11 rebound advantage, but a 8-7 disadvantage in offensive rebounds.
 
Both teams struggled from beyond the arc in the first half as Edinboro shot 0-5, while West Virginia State shot 1-8.
 
Hines opened the scoring in the second half with a layup to give West Virginia State a two-point lead. After a Laura Szorenyi free throw, Fischer drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 33-all. Edinboro used a 7-3 run to gain a five-point lead, their biggest of the night. A West Virginia layup with nine seconds remaining by Deyahnna Styles cut the Edinboro lead to 42-39 heading to the fourth quarter.
 
Lauren Hippo opened the scoring in the final period for the Fighting Scots to push the lead back up to five. A 12-4 run by the Yellow Jackets gave West Virginia State a three-point lead with just over a minute to play. The Fighting Scots scored the final seven points of the game while holding West Virginia State to zero points in the final 1:03 to seal the victory. Freeland scored five of the final seven points, while Whitney Allen added two clutch free-throws to help ice the game.
 
Both teams continued to struggle shooting the ball in the second half of play. Edinboro shot 29.7 percent (11-37) from the field and were 1-5 from three-point range. West Virginia State made just eight field goals in the second half, shooting 28.6 percent (8-26), while going 0-7 from downtown. Hippo struggled to get anything going in the contest, shooting just 1-10 from the field and 0-3 from three. She was able to contribute in other ways, totaling four rebounds with three steals and two blocks.
 
Edinboro opens up PSAC play this Wednesday, November 18 hosting Slippery Rock in McComb Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
