The Game StoryThe Edinboro University women's soccer team will meet seventh-ranked Gannon for an astounding third time this season on Sunday when the two teams square off in the second round of the NCAA Atlantic Subregionals. The contest will be played at Gannon University at 2:00 p.m.
Their first meeting this year saw Gannon score four first-half goals en route to a 4-0 victory over the Fighting Scots back on October 13. Edinboro exacted revenge on the Golden Knights in the PSAC Semifinals with a 3-1 win on November 6. Both of those matches took place at Gannon.
Edinboro, the PSAC runners up and the fourth seed in the Atlantic Regionals, takes with them to Gannon a 14-7-1 overall record. The Golden Knights are the first seed with an 18-2-0 overall record, obtaining a first-round bye. The winner of this match will play either sixth-seed East Stroudsburg or second-seed West Virginia Wesleyan in the Atlantic Region Finals on Thursday, November 20.
The Fighting Scots played Charleston (WV) to a scoreless tie in the first round on Friday, but won in penalty kicks, 3-1, to advance to the second round for the first time in school history. Edinboro previously made the NCAA Tournament every year from 2011-2013, but exited in the first round each time.
Gannon was the talk of Division II throughout the regular season, winning their first 17 matches and receiving a number-one national ranking by the NCAA. They lost their regular season finale to East Stroudsburg, 4-2. They clinched the number-one seed in the PSAC Tournament, defeating eighth-seed Bloomsburg, 3-1, in the quarterfinals, but fell to fourth-seed Edinboro in the semifinals.

Atlantic Region First RoundEdinboro 0, Charleston (WV) 0 (Edinboro advanced on penalty kicks, 3-1)Three lightning delays. Two overtimes. And zero goals. The Edinboro and Charleston (WV) women's soccer teams battled through 110 minutes in the NCAA Division Atlantic Subregional first round game without a goal. When it was all said and done, penalty kicks decided who moved on to face top-seeded Gannon in Sunday's championship game. Edinboro would prevail 3-1 to advance in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program's history.
The contest was played under brutal conditions at Gannon's McConnell Family Stadium, with winds gusting to 40-45 mph., putting the wind chills into the high 20's and low 30's. Rain and sleet pelted the field throughout the four-and-a-half hours it took to complete the match. The two teams were forced to wait out two hours in delays due to the lightning.
Sarah Baskey started the contest in goal, but Kagiavas removed her at 61:39.
Sierra Davis, a sophomore transfer from Cleveland State, came in and played the rest of the way. She finished with four saves, while Baskey had two.
The Golden Eagles had the first opportunity to shoot in the first round of penalty kicks, with Marlee Coleman's shot deflected by Davis and hitting the post.
Nicole Chabot fired a shot past Charleston goalkeeper Zoe Zyta into the right side of the net for Edinboro. Both teams made good in the second round, with Alice Broadbent scoring for Charleston and
Reilee DuPratt answering in the right side of the net for the Fighting Scots. Davis came up with another stop in the third round, as the sophomore made a diving stop to her left on Courtney Underwood's shot. When
Jansen Hartmann blasted a shot into upper left corner past a diving Zyta, Edinboro led 3-1. Moments later, Davis came up with her third big stop as she deflected a shot by Hannah Myers to end the shootout and send the Fighting Scots onto the field in celebration.
When They Last Met…PSAC Semifinals: Edinboro 3, #5 Gannon 1Opportunity knocked for the Fighting Scots early in the match, as Gannon's Becca Albert was given a red card in the 18th minute, causing the Golden Knights to play with ten players for the remainder of the game. As she did in the quarterfinals,
Alex Brown stepped up and put Edinboro on the board first against fifth-ranked and first-seed Gannon with a goal in the 24th minute. Brown grabbed a pass from
Jansen Hartmann, split two defenders, and shot the ball past goalkeeper Shannon Differ for a 1-0 Edinboro lead. The match would stay that way until the 61st minute, when Hartmann, the team's leading scorer, watched as her shot from the right end deflected off Differ and into the goal to put the Fighting Scots up, 2-0. Gannon tried mightily to rally, even outshooting the Scots in the second half 17-6. Only one shot made its way past the Edinboro defense and goalie
Sarah Baskey, a 75th-minute goal by Ally Sharpe to bring the Golden Knights to within one goal. With Gannon mounting a late threat, Brown came to the rescue in the 81st minute, scoring an insurance goal to propel Edinboro to the PSAC Finals for the first time in school history.
