Fighting Scots Fall in Fifth Set to Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. - (November 6, 2015) The Edinboro University volleyball team fell to local PSAC West Rival Mercyhurst on Friday night by a score of 3-2. The loss snaps a 15-game winning streak for the Fighting Scots, one short of a school record 16-games. The Fighting Scots are now 28-3 overall and 17-2 in the PSAC West this season, while the Lakers improve to 15-15 overall with a 10-9 mark in PSAC play.

After dropping the first set 25-27, the Fighting Scots won the next two by scores of 25-22 and 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead over the Lakers. Mercyhurst won the next set 25-22 to force a fifth set that they ultimately won by a score of 15-12 to seal the victory.

Sophomore Challen Litwiler led the Edinboro attack with 19 kills, while junior Victoria Severo contributed 16. Sophomore setter Sydney Trathen paced the Fighting Scots offense with 45 assists to go along with her nine kills and team-high .529 hitting percentage. Senior Marah Maycock totaled five service aces to push her career total to 147, ranking sixth all-time.

Maycock totaled a career-high 35 digs in the match. Litwiler ranked second on the squad with 16, while freshman Megan Screptock and sophomore Taylor Palowski totaled 12 digs each. Severo led the Fighting Scots defense with three total blocks, including a team-high two block solos.

Edinboro is right back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. The Fighting Scots take on second-place Gannon in a crucial PSAC West contest. With a win, the Fighting Scots would clinch the first seed in the PSAC West playoffs.
