AMHERST, N.Y. (December 12, 2015) – Despite Edinboro senior guard
Henri Wade-Chatman scoring a season-high 29 points and reaching the 1,000 career point milestone Saturday, it was not enough to pull out a Fighting Scots win at Daemen. Edinboro fell to the Wildcats, 88-79. The Scots dropped to 5-3 overall while Daemen improved to 2-3 overall. Edinboro is 5-1 in PSAC play.
Wade-Chatman entered Saturday's game needing nine more points to amass the 1,000-point threshold. He accomplished it when he drained a 3-point shot, assisted by
Sheldon Brogdon, with 6:17 remaining in the first half. He ended his day going 9-for-15 from the field while shooting 6-for-8 from 3-point range. Wade-Chatman now has 1,020 career points, which puts him at 27th all time.
Redshirt sophomore guard
Jaymon Mason was second with 19 points, shooting 5-for-10 on the day, and collected seven rebounds. Senior center
Tommy Scales and forward
Art Cook each grabbed a team-high eight boards, while Brogdon, a junior guard, came off the bench to tally 15 points.
Edinboro trailed in the turnover margin, 15-9, resulting in Daemen scoring 20 points off turnovers, compared to the Fighting Scots scoring just five. The Wildcats also shot well from the paint, outscoring the Scots in said area, 36-20. The Boro also fell behind in the rebounding margin, 43-40.
The Scots had an impressive first half and led at halftime, 42-37. The Scots shot 59.3% (16-for-27) from the field and were 66.7% (8-for-12) in 3-pointers. They led by as much as 11 points with 2:17 remaining in the first half. Daemen was able to rope Edinboro's lead down to five at halftime. Wade-Chatman and Mason accounted for 29 of Edinboro's first-half points. However, Mason tallied three personal fouls in the opening half, causing head coach
Pat Cleary to bench his starting guard with 6:12 left in the half.
The Wildcats came out to a roaring start in the second half, taking a 45-44 lead with 16:39 to go on a layup by Nick Petrucelli. Cook would immediately answer for Edinboro with a jumper to regain the lead with 16:22 left, but that would be the last time the Scots would hold a lead. Daemen would respond with a 17-3 run, backed by a pair of Wildcat 3-pointers off turnovers by guard
Je'Land Head, to give them a 62-49 advantage with 12:56 remaining in regulation. The closest Edinboro would get to Daemen's lead for the rest of the game were a pair of free throws by Mason to dwindle the Wildcats' advantage down to six points, 78-72, with 2:33 showing on the clock.
The Scots did not fare so well shooting in the second half, holding a 28.2 field goal percentage (11-for-39) and a 26.7 percentage on 3-pointers (4-for-15). Daemen, meanwhile, shot 50.0% from the field (18-for-36) and 60.0% behind the arc for 51 second-half points.
The Fighting Scots had defeated the Wildcats in all nine of their previous matchups heading into Saturday. Their last meeting was during the 1996-97 season.
Edinboro returns to their home court for some PSAC action against Gannon on Wednesday, December 16 at 7:30 p.m.
