Fighting Scots Prevail in Overtime Against Daemen, 87-84, Behind Johnson's Late Rebound and Bucket

AMHERST, N.Y. (December 12, 2015) – Nicole Johnson's rebound basket with nine seconds remaining allowed the Edinboro University women's basketball team to capture an 87-84 win in overtime at Daemen on Saturday afternoion. It marks the final non-conference game of the season as Edinboro improved to 9-3, with Daemen falling to 2-3 overall.

In a game that featured 22 lead changes and 21 ties, the Fighting Scots needed several heroics to pull out the road win. Trailing by one with 37 seconds remaining, Lindsey Jahn came up with a clutch steal and sister Michelle Jahn scored on a layup to put the Fighting Scots up 76-75 with 33 seconds remaining. Following a Wildcat turnover, Lauren Hippo was fouled and converted a free throw to put Edinboro up by two with 30 seconds remaining.

A pair of free throws by Daemen's Raeann Stilwell tied the game at 77-77 with 26 seconds remaining. Michelle Jahn missed a 3-pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime.

Daemen took an early three-point lead in overtime on a free throw by Taylor Heinold and a Natalie Galus layup. Whitney Allen would convert 1-of-2 free throws to cut the lead to two points at 80-78. Aignee' Freeland followed with a pair of free throws to tie the game at 80-80 with two minutes remaining.

The two teams traded free throws by Heinold and Hippo, respectively, before Michelle Jahn's bucket put Edinboro up 83-81 with 54 seconds remaining. Stilwell answered with a basket to tie the game with 37 seconds left. Edinboro came down court and Freeland missed on a layup, but Johnson grabbed the offensive board and put it back in to give Edinboro the lead for good at 85-83.

Johnson's basket was her only points of the game. The junior forward missed the first nine games of the season with an injury and just returned to action a week ago.

The Wildcats had a chance to tie the game but Stillwell made just one of two free throws, with Freeland grabbing the rebound. She was fouled and made both shots at the charity stripe for a three-point lead with seven second remaining. Daemen was unable to get a tying shot off.

Both teams were in foul trouble the majority of the game as Edinboro made 25-of-39 shots from the free throw line while Daemen was 22-of-35. The Wildcats held a slim 47-43 advantage on the glass. The Fighting Scots shot 42.0 percent (29-of-69) from the field, while Daemen shot 43.1 percent (28-of-65).

Katie Fischer led Edinboro with a career-high 31 points on 9-of-20 shooting, including hitting a team-high 4-of-7 3-pointers, and was 9-of-11 from the line. The junior guard was not around for the finish, however, as she fouled out with 1:02 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Freeland added 22 points and six rebounds to move into 15th place in all-time scoring with 1,273 points. She also climbed into third place in all-time rebounds with 811.

Three Wildcats scored in double figures led by Sarah Saba with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Stilwell and Galus totaled 16 and 15, respectively.

The Fighting Scots are back at home in McComb Fieldhouse on Wednesday, December 16 after seven straight road games. Edinboro will host PSAC rival Gannon for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
