EDINBORO, Pa. (December 16, 2015) – The Edinboro University women's basketball team had its string of six straight home wins against Gannon snapped on Wednesday night as the Lady Knights defeated Edinboro, 75-55. With the loss, Edinboro is now 9-4 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC West while Gannon improves to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The 20-point deficit is the Fighting Scots second largest loss this season.
Fischer led Edinboro with 28 pointsEdinboro never tasted the lead and the score was never tied as Gannon jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the opening quarter. A 10-4 Fighting Scots run, with
Katie Fischer scoring all 10 points, including two 3-pointers, would bring Edinboro to within just one point with 4:38 remaining in the first period. Gannon answered swiftly and ended the period on a 13-2 run to take a 24-12 lead. The Lady Knights shot 62.5 percent (10-of-16) in the first quarter, including going 2-of-3 from beyond-the-arc. Edinboro, meanwhile, shot just 35.7 percent (5-of-14) and were outrebounded 11-4.
Gannon continued to roll as the lead grew to as many as 17 in the second quarter and to 25 points, the largest lead of the night, with 2:55 remaining in the third period.
The Lady Knights finished the evening shooting 58.0 percent (29-of-50) from the field, including going 10-of-20 from three. The Fighting Scots struggled mightily on the offensive end, shooting just 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from the field and 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from beyond-the-arc. The 32.8 percent field goal percentage ties a season low for the Fighting Scots. Tonight was the first time an Edinboro opponent shot over 50.0 percent from deep and the 58.0 percent field goal percentage is the highest any opponent has shot this season.
Edinboro was out-rebounded for a third straight game as Gannon held a 32-31 advantage on the glass, but the Fighting Scots held a 17-8 offensive rebound advantage.
Fischer was the source of much of Edinboro's offense, accounting for over 50 percent of the teams points. Fischer totaled 28 points on a career-high 28 attempts, including a career-high 11 3-pt. attempts. She went 11-of-28 from the field and made 4-of-11 3-pointers. In just her third game back from injury,
Nicole Johnson led the squad with nine boards, including six offensive rebounds. Johnson and Lauren
Johnson was Boro's leading rebounder with 9 Hippo totaled six points apiece, with Hippo scoring four of those from the line, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the charity stripe.
Four of Gannon's starting five scored in double figures, led by McKenna Shives with 21 points. Jennie Thies had a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards and Morgan Neighbors added 14 points, hitting a team-high 4-of-5 3-pointers. Brianna Brennan added 12 points.
Edinboro is back in action this Saturday, December 19, hosting Indiana(Pa.) for a 1 p.m. tipoff. Saturday's game will also be the annual "Toys for Tots" event.
