Edinboro's 42-Point Second-Half Surge Hands West Chester Its First Defeat

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (December 5, 2015) – The Edinboro men's basketball used 42 second-half points to hand West Chester its first loss on Saturday, defeating the Golden Rams in a road PSAC contest, 69-66. The Fighting Scots increased their winning streak to three games and improved to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the PSAC. West Chester dropped to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in PSAC play.

The win is only the latest in a successful week of PSAC action for the Scots. On Tuesday they defeated Mercyhurst, 77-67, and won at East Stroudsburg in last-minute fashion Friday night, 68-66. Sophomore guard Jaymon Mason buried a game-winning jumper with 2.9 seconds remaining to hand the Warriors their second loss of the season.

Mason led the Scots at West Chester with 23 points, connecting on four of seven shots from three-point range. Senior guard Henri Wade-Chatman was second in scoring with 15 points and led the team in rebounds with eight. Senior center Tommy Scales was second with seven boards and scored seven points, while junior guard Sheldon Brogdon finished third in scoring with 14 points.

In a game that was tied only three times and featured just eight lead changes, the Boro trailed the Golden Rams in several statistical categories, including rebounds (37-42), points in the paint (16-38), points off turnovers (14-17), and bench points (21-25). Edinboro led in the game for 15:05, while West Chester held the lead for 22:49.

The first half was a low-scoring affair, with West Chester holding a 33-27 lead at halftime. Edinboro shot just 8-for-31 (25.8%) from the field in the first 20 minutes, while WCU shot 13-for-29 (44.8%). Mason scored 13 of Edinboro's 27 first-half points.

It looked as though the Golden Rams had a good grip on things to begin the second half, as a layup by Matt Wiseley and a 3-pointer by Jackson Hyland increased West Chester's lead to 11 (38-27), their largest lead of the game, with 17:48 remaining in regulation. Wade-Chatman would answer for Edinboro with a trifecta and a layup of his own to trim West Chester's lead back to six with 14:23 to go. The Fighting Scots worked on chipping away at the Golden Rams lead for nearly the next seven minutes, until another Wade-Chatman layup knotted the game up at 48 with 7:25 remaining.

Wade-Chatman's game-tying layup was in the midst of a 12-2 Edinboro scoring run, which was cued by a Daryan Robinson jumper with 7:57 left in the game. The run gave the Scots their largest lead of the game, going up 58-50 with 3:53 remaining. The Boro would not relent the lead for the remainder of the game.

Trailing 64-56 with 1:08 to go, the Golden Rams sent the Fighting Scots to the free throw line six times in that final span. The Scots converted on seven of those 11 free throw tries. However, WCU was still able to bring Edinboro's lead down to two (67-65) with 11 ticks to go thanks to a layup by Matt Penecale. After an intentional foul sent Sheldon Brogdon to the line, he could only connect on one of his two free throws, prompting him to intentional foul Mike Wilson to prevent a game-tying, 3-point scoring opportunity. Wilson made his first free throw, and while his second shot fell short, it landed out of bounds, last touched by Edinboro, giving the Golden Rams one last chance to draw the game even with six seconds to play.

Their final chance came up short, as Wisely missed what would be a game-tying layup, falling into the hands of Tommy Scales for Edinboro with two ticks showing on the clock. Scales was intentionally fouled as a result and converted one of his two free throws to give Edinboro the 69-66 victory.

Edinboro fared much better shooting in the second half, going 14-for-28 (50.0%) from the field and 6-for-12 (50.0%) from behind the arc. West Chester shot 12-for-29 (41.4%) in second-half field goals and only converted on one of seven 3-point attempts in the final 20 minutes of action.

Wade-Chatman's 15 points gives him 991 career points at Edinboro, nine points shy of reaching 1,000 points. He is currently 27th all-time in career points.

Edinboro has a week off ahead of them before heading to Amherst, N.Y. on Saturday, December 12 for a non-conference road game at Daemen at 2:00 p.m.
