Fighting Scots Downed by Slippery Rock 75-64

EDINBORO, Pa. (February 11, 2015) – The Edinboro men's basketball team fell by a score of 75-64 to visiting Slippery Rock in a PSAC Western Division matchup on Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots dropped their third straight game, moving to 11-12 on the season and 8-11 in PSAC West play, while The Rock boosted its records to 17-7 and 12-6, respectively.

Sam Sealy-James grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds for 
the Fighting Scots. 
Slippery Rock clinched a PSAC Tournament berth with the victory, marking its sixth postseason berth in the last seven seasons. 

Both teams failed to score nearly three minutes into the contest, before Edinboro started the game on a 12-2 run keyed by five points from Henri Wade-Chatman. The junior guard capped the spurt with a jumper at the 13:09 mark of the first half.
 
The Rock answered with a 12-2 run of its own to knot the game at 14-14 with 9:37 to play in the opening period.
 
Quinn Lee Yaw would knock down a pair of free throws to regain a 16-14 advantage with just over nine minutes to go in the half, before Slippery Rock scored four straight points to take its first lead of the night at 18-16 with 8:33 remaining in the opening stanza.
 
The two teams would trade baskets with neither team leading by more than three points from that point on in the first frame, with Slippery Rock claiming a 34-33 advantage heading into the locker room after a first half which saw eight ties and nine lead changes.
 
The Rock held that one-point lead at 41-40 at the 14:22 mark of the second half before rattling off a 11-2 surge and gaining a 52-42 advantage with 10:27 to play in the contest.
 
However, the Fighting Scots battle back. Trailing by eight points at 67-59 with 2:37 to play in the game, when Wade-Chatman knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to six points at 67-61 at the 2:27 mark of the second half.
 
After a Slippery Rock turnover, Wade-Chatman was fouled before sinking one-of-two free throws to shrink The Rock's advantage to five points at 67-62 with 1:45 showing on the clock.
 
Unfortunately for the Fighting Scots, Slippery Rock closed the contest with an 8-2 run to earn the 75-64 conference victory.
 
Wade-Chatman netted a game-high 29 points for Edinboro, connecting on 7-of-30 field goals. He knocked down 4-of-11 shots from behind the arc and 11-of-16 free throws to go along with six rebounds. His 30 field goal attempts and 16 free throw tries both represent career-highs.
 
Mason was the only other Fighting Scot in double-figures with 17 markers on 6-of-15 shooting. The redshirt freshman guard made 1-of-6 3-pointers and drained 4-of-5 shots from the charity stripe.

Sam Sealy-James paced Edinboro with a career-high 11 rebounds while matching a career-high with six blocked shots.

Malcolm Richardson paced The Rock career-highs of 25 points and 12 boards, shooting 8-of-15 from the field. He was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Antonio Butler also recorded a double-double for Slippery Rock, tallying 15 points and 11 rebounds. Abdul King chipped in 11 points off the bench for The Rock.
 
The Fighting Scots were held to a season-low 26.9 percent (18-of-67) from the field, including a 23.8 percent (5-of-21) showing from long range. Edinboro connected on 69.7 percent (23-of-33) of free throws in the game.
 
Slippery Rock shot 34.8 percent (23-of-66) for the game, 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from behind the arc and 70.3 percent (26-of-37) from the free throw line.
 
The Rock, who came into the contest as the top rebounding team in NCAA Division II, outrebounded the Fighting Scots 58-46. Slippery Rock outscored Edinboro in the paint 26-16, 11-5 on second-chance points, 8-0 on fast break points and 23-2 in bench points.
 
All told, the contest saw 13 lead changes and 10 ties.
 
The Fighting Scots return to action on Saturday, hosting No. 16 Indiana (Pa.) at 3 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. The Crimson Hawks sit in second place in the PSAC Western Division standings with a 14-4 conference mark after a 58-55 loss at Mercyhurst on Wednesday night. Saturday's contest is Edinboro's annual Fighting Scots Fighting Cancer game.
