Edinboro Upsets No. 16 IUP 79-77 in Overtime Thriller

EDINBORO, Pa. (February 14, 2015) – Indiana (Pa.)'s Jeremy Jeffers drained a 3-pointer as time expired in regulation to send the PSAC Western Division matchup between the Edinboro men's basketball team and the 16th-ranked Crimson Hawks into overtime on Saturday afternoon. However, the Fighting Scots outscored IUP 9-7 in the bonus period and Jeffers' 3-point try at the overtime horn was off the mark, as Edinboro pulled the 79-77 upset over the Crimson Hawks at McComb Fieldhouse.

The Fighting Scots boosted their record to 12-12 on the season and 9-11 in PSAC West play with the win, while IUP fell to 20-5 overall and 14-5 in the conference.

With Edinboro holding a slim 68-67 lead with four seconds showing on the clock in the second half, Jaymon Mason knocked down a pair of free throws to extend the Fighting Scots' advantage to 70-67.

Sheldon Brogdon was 3-for-6 from behind the arc and 
finished with 16 points for Edinboro. 
IUP called a timeout, drawing up a play that the Crimson Hawks would execute perfectly, as Tevin Hanner found Jeremy Jeffers on the left wing for a 3-pointer at the buzzer to knot the game at 70-70 and send the contest into overtime.
 
In the bonus period, Daddy Ugbede scored two of his game-high 26 points on the first basket of overtime to give IUP a 72-70 lead with 3:54 remaining.
 
The Fighting Scots answered with a 9-2 run sparked by a Sheldon Brogdon old-fashioned three-point play to put Edinboro ahead 79-74 with 54 seconds to play in overtime.
 
Devante Chance drained a 3-pointer on the next Crimson Hawks' possession to cut the Fighting Scots' lead to 79-77 with 38 seconds showing on the clock.
 
After an Edinboro timeout, Jaymon Mason was fouled and sent to the charity stripe for a pair of free throws with nine seconds to play.
 
Mason would miss both free throws, giving IUP a chance to tie or take the lead.
 
IUP called a timeout, before Jeffers had another chance at the buzzer, but this time his 3-pointer was off the mark as the Fighting Scots held on for the 79-77 victory.
 
The win snapped Edinboro's 13-game losing streak to the Crimson Hawks. Prior to Saturday, the Fighting Scots' last win against IUP came during the 2008-09 campaign when Edinboro topped the Crimson Hawks by a score of 83-78 at McComb Fieldhouse. The two teams were playing in their third overtime contest since the 2012-13 season.
 
The victory also marked Fighting Scots' second year head coach Pat Cleary's first triumph over a ranked opponent, while representing Edinboro's first win over a ranked team since defeating 17th-ranked Gannon 67-64 on February 13, 2013.

Tommy Scales matched a career-high
with 15 points off the bench. 


Mason paced the Fighting Scots with 24 markers, one point shy of his career-high. The redshirt freshman made 8-of-20 field goals, 3-of-9 shots from behind the arc and 5-of-7 free throws. He also grabbed a game- and career-high nine rebounds.
 
Brogdon tallied 16 points off the bench on 5-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-6 shots from behind the arc to go along with a perfect 3-of-3 showing at the charity stripe.
 
Scales matched a career-high with 15 markers off the bench for the Fighting Scots, connecting on 6-of-8 field goals in the win. The 6'8'' center also matched a game-high with three blocked shots.
 
Henri Wade-Chatman contributed eight points, six rebounds and a team-high four assists, while Casey Baker chipped in six points and eight rebounds. Sam Sealy-James added six points and five rebounds for Edinboro.
 
Ugbede led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting off the bench for the Crimson Hawks. The Drake transfer was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
 
Chance scored 18 points and dished out a game-high six assists, followed by Jeffers and Shawn Dyer with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Hanner grabbed a team-high eight boards off the bench for IUP.
 
After gaining a 33-31 halftime advantage, the Fighting Scots led for virtually the entire second half.
 
Brandon Norfleet knocked down a jumper to cut Edinboro's advantage to two points at 41-39 with 14:49 to play in regulation, before the Fighting Scots responded with a 9-3 run to take their largest lead of the night of eight points at 50-42 with 12:53 remaining in the second frame. Brogdon keyed the surge with a pair of 3-pointers.
 
Mason connected on a 3-pointer on an assist by Wade-Chatman to give Edinboro a 67-60 lead with just over six minutes to play in regulation, before the Crimson Hawks closed the second half with a 10-3 run, including Jeffers' 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the contest into overtime.
 
The Fighting Scots shot 43.3 percent (29-of-67) from the field in the victory, including 57.1 percent (4-for-7) in the overtime period. Edinboro connected on 33.3 percent (8-of-24) from behind the arc and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line. The Fighting Scots started a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe before missing their first free throw.

Henri Wade-Chatman added eight points and six boards. 

IUP shot 48.4 percent (30-of-62) for the game, combining to shoot 50.0 percent (18-of-36) in the second half and overtime. The Crimson Hawks made 44.4 percent (8-of-18) of 3-pointers and shot 90.0 percent (9-of-10) from the free throw line.
 
Edinboro held a 39-33 rebounding edge, including a 14-6 margin in offensive boards which led to a 14-4 advantage over IUP in second-chance points. The Crimson Hawks outscored the Fighting Scots in the paint 34-30 and 12-9 in points off turnovers.
 
With Saturday's win and Pitt-Johnstown's 66-36 loss at Gannon, Edinboro gains a game on the Mountain Cats in the PSAC Western Division Standings. The Fighting Scots (9-11) sit in seventh place in the division, while Pitt-Johnstown and California (Pa.) are tied for fifth place in the PSAC West with 9-10 ledgers in conference play. Six teams from both PSAC divisions qualify for the conference tournament. Two of the six spots in the Western Division still remain.
 
Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, February 18 travelling to Clarion. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. against the Golden Eagles at Tippin Gymnasium in Clarion, Pa.
