Fighting Scots Cap Two-Game Swing with 14-10 Victory over West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. (March 15, 2015) – The Edinboro women's lacrosse team used a balanced scoring effort to earn a 14-10 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at Ross Field in Buckhannon, W. Va. The win marked the second of the day for the Fighting Scots, who also defeated Alderson Broaddus on Sunday morning 19-6. With the pair of wins, Edinboro boosts its record to 3-0, while the Lady Bobcats drop to 5-2.  
 
Five Fighting Scots scored two goals apiece and Rebecca Martin tallied six points to pace Edinboro on the day.
 
Anny Purdy finished with two goals to go along with an assist in the win, while Hannah Fitzgerald, Emily Peters, Rachel Olson and Haleigh Wright each netted two goals for the Fighting Scots. Cydney Hrycko contributed a goal and an assist, as well.
 
West Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to a 4-2 lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, before Wright and Peters each found the back of the net to knot the game at 4-4. The Lady Bobcats answered with a goal with eight seconds remaining in the opening period, taking a 5-4 lead into the break. Hannah Mong and Kasey Thur also contributed goals for the Fighting Scots in the first half.
 
In the second half, after West Virginia Wesleyan's Emily Noel scored to give the Lady Bobcats a 6-4 lead, Edinboro scored six unanswered goals to gain a 10-6 advantage, the last coming with 18:19 showing on the clock. Purdy ignited and capped the surge with a pair of goals, while Fitzgerald added a pair of scores during the spurt. Peters gave the Fighting Scots their first lead of the game at 7-6, while Olson extended the advantage to 8-6 two minutes later.
 
West Virginia Wesleyan responded with three straight goals of its own to cut the Fighting Scots' lead to 10-9, but Edinboro would score four of the final five goals in the last 9:46 of the contest to seal the victory.
 
Wright found the back of the net on a free position shot to put the Fighting Scots on top 11-9. Noel countered with a free position goal for the Lady Bobcats to cut the lead to 11-10, before Hrycko, Martin and Olson each scored to close out the win for Edinboro.
 
Noel scored a game-high five goals for the Lady Bobcats, while Hardman added three scores.
 
Paige Skinner collected the win in net for the Fighting Scots, making nine saves in the win.
 
Edinboro outshot West Virginia Wesleyan 36-28 for the game, including a 32-19 advantage in shots on goal. The Fighting Scots committed just seven turnovers in the contest, while the Lady Bobcats had 18 turnovers.
 
Edinboro starts the season 3-0 for the second consecutive season and for the second time overall in the seven-season history of the Fighting Scot program.  
 
Edinboro returns to action opening its home portion of the 2015 schedule along with PSAC play hosting Shippensburg next Saturday, March 21 at Sox Harrison Stadium.  The Fighting Scots were originally scheduled to open up at home against Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday, but the match has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced for the non-conference contest.
