EDINBORO, Pa. (March 21, 2015) –
Alexa Healy scored seven goals to help the Edinboro women's lacrosse team set a program record with its fourth straight win to start the season, topping Shippensburg by a score of 16-9 on Saturday afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium. In addition, the 4-0 Fighting Scots opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play with a win for the first time in program history under seventh-year head coach
Kevin Cooke. The Raiders dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference action with the loss.
Healy's seven goals mark a career-high for the sophomore, who came into Saturday's contest with three scores on the year. She fell one goal shy of the school record of eight goals, which was set by Shannon Rohrich against Millersville on April 6, 2013. Healy scored six goals on three different occasions last season.
Anny PurdyRebecca Martin dished out a game-high eight assists for Edinboro, while
Cydney Hrycko finished with three goals and an assist. Hrycko also contributed a game-high six draw controls for the Fighting Scots.
Anna Purdy tallied four points on the day with two goals and a pair of assists in the win.
Emily Peters found the back of the net twice for Edinboro, while
Hannah Mong and
Rachel Olson added goals, as well.
Healy scored three consecutive goals to start the game, giving the Fighting Scots an early 3-0 lead just over seven minutes into the contest.
Edinboro extended its advantage to 6-0 on goals from Mong, Hrycko and Purdy. The Raiders broke the shutout with a score from Sarah McLeod to cut the Fighting Scots' lead to 6-1, before Hrycko answered with her second goal of the game to put Edinboro ahead 7-1 with 12:17 to play in the first half.
Shippensburg's Courtney Kennedy responded with a goal to shrink the deficit to five at 7-2, but the Fighting Scots would score three unanswered goals from Peters, Olson and Healy to close the half and take a 10-2 lead into the locker room.
Shippensburg's Sheila Johnson opened scoring in the second half with a goal at the 26:54 mark to cut the Edinboro lead to 10-3, before Hrycko and Healy each scored for the Fighting Scots to give Edinboro its largest advantage of the day of nine goals at 12-3 with 24:45 showing on the clock.
The Raiders would score four straight goals to minimize the deficit to 12-7 with just under 17 minutes remaining in the game. However, the Fighting Scots responded with goals from Peters and Healy to push the lead back to seven goals at 14-7.
Shippensburg would once again score two consecutive goals to shrink the Edinboro lead to 14-9, before Healy and Purdy sealed the victory with goals both on assists from Martin, giving the Fighting Scots a 16-9 PSAC triumph.
Netminder
Paige Skinner earned the win in goal for Edinboro, making 13 saves to go along with a team-high ground balls.
Ally Frymoyer suffered the loss in net for the Raiders, tallying eight saves and a game-high five ground balls.
Johnson paced Shippensburg with three goals, followed by Garrie Grenfell with two scores. Amanda Frank led the Raiders with a pair of assists.
Shippensburg outshout the Fighting Scots 34-26 on the day, while Edinboro held an 18-8 advantage on draw controls over the Raiders. The Fighting Scots were 3-for-5 on free position shots, compared to Shippensburg's 2-for-11.
Edinboro returns to action on Tuesday, March 24 travelling to Lock Haven. The Bald Eagles sit second in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division II Top 25. The match is set to get underway at 4 p.m. at Charlotte E. Smith Field in Lock Haven, Pa.
