EDINBORO, Pa. –
Cydney Hrycko scored with 11 seconds remaining in the match to give Edinboro an 11-10 win over Millersville in women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium. The victory boosted Edinboro's best-ever start to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC. Millersville fell to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Seniors Alayna Davis and Samantha Tomasic were recognized
prior to Saturday's match.Despite bone-chilling conditions of 21 degrees and a wind chill of seven degrees, the Fighting Scots jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
Alexa Healy accounted for the first two goals, with a
Rachel Olson goal and one by
Rebecca Martin making it 4-0 with 25:02 to play in the first half. After Millersville scored twice the Fighting Scots answered with goals by Healy and
Emily Peters as the margin again grew to four goals at 6-2.
Edinboro would struggle after that as both teams were plagued by turnovers. Millersville would close the first half with a pair of goals to make it 6-4 at intermission, and the Marauders opened the second half with five straight goals for a 9-6 lead with 21:49 to play.
The Fighting Scots finally ended a draught of over 22 minutes without a goal on Hrycko's first goal of the match with 19:23 remaining. That would start a run of three straight goals for the sophomore midfielder, the last tying the contest at 9-9 with 13:28 to play off a pass from
Anna Purdy.
Edinboro would score its fourth straight goal to regain the lead at 10-9 with 11:01 remaining on Healy's fourth goal of the match and 17
th of the season, assisted by Martin. It marked the 37
th assist of the season for Martin, one more than the school-record total she finished with a year ago.
Millersville would knot the match up at 10-10 on a goal by Sabrina Fusco with 10:11 to play. Neither team would score after that until Hrycko notched her fourth goal of the match, all in the second half, with just 11 seconds remaining. The winning score came following a Millersville turnover a minute earlier.
Edinboro ended the day with a 29-17 advantage in shots, with freshman
Paige Skinner turning in another solid effort in goal with six saves. Millersville's Shannon Davis had 11 saves. The Fighting Scots battled through a bit of bad luck, as well, as five shots hit the post. The sloppy contest also featured 26 turnovers by Millersville and 23 by Edinboro.
Edinboro returns to action on Tuesday, March 31 playing at Indiana(Pa.).
