EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's lacrosse team fell to 6-4 on the season and 3-4 in PSAC action with a 16-9 loss to 15
th-ranked Seton Hill on Wednesday afternoon. The Griffins improved to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in league play. It marked Edinboro's third loss of the season to a nationally-ranked opponent.
Rebecca Martin contributed two goals and three assists to leave her just one point shy of the career record for points. She now has 138 career points, with Shannon Rohrich holding the record with 139 points. In addition, she now has 55 points on the season, leaving her seven points shy of her own school record set a year ago.
Anna PurdyThe match was delayed twenty minutes at the start following a lightning delay at Sox Harrison Stadium. When it did get underway Seton Hill quickly jumped ahead 4-0 just over five minutes into the match. Two of the goals were scored by All-American Emma Simmers, who leads the PSAC in goals scored.
Edinboro's defense settled down after that and held the Griffins without a score until just under 12 minutes remaining in the half. Unfortunately, Edinboro was unable to get a ball past goalkeeper Meghan Hollar. Seton Hill would boost its lead to 5-0 with a goal by Tristen Hanke with 11:54 remaining in the half.
The Fighting Scots climbed back into the contest with three straight goals in a two-minute period to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Alexa Healy accounted for Edinboro's first goal at 10:03, and
Emily Peters followed with two more, the second at the 8:05 mark.
Seton Hill would answer with back-to-back goals in a span of 37 seconds to expand its lead to 7-3, with Martin's goal making it 7-4 with 4:26 to play. Seton Hill would add another goal for an 8-4 lead at the half.
While an injury-depleted Edinboro squad battled the Griffins on even terms for much of the first half, four goals in the first ten minutes of the second half took the steam out of Edinboro. Renee Kania's goal with 20:25 to play gave Seton Hill a 12-4.
Edinboro cut the deficit in half with a pair of goals a minute apart, one by Healy and the other by
Anna Purdy with 17:36 remaining.
That would be as close as Edinboro would get, however. Purdy would score three straight goals, and Martin added her 10
th of the season.
Purdy had three goals and an assist for the Fighting Scots, with Healy, Peters and Martin adding two goals apiece. Seton Hill had seven different players dent the net, led by three goals and a pair of assists for Simmers and three goals and an assist for Hanke.
Seton Hill held a 29-21 advantage in shots, with both teams committing 18 turnovers.
Paige Skinner had seven saves for Edinboro, with Hollar stopping nine shots.
