Ashley Mutkus Scores Twice as Edinboro Hands Notre Dame(OH) 3-1 Defeat

EDINBORO, Pa. (Sept. 5, 2015) – In a key early-season Atlantic Region matchup, Edinboro tallied a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes to hand visiting Notre Dame(OH) a 3-1 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium. The Fighting Scots improved to 2-0-0 on the young season, while the Falcons fell to 1-1-0.

Notre Dame was the 2014 Mountain East Conference champion and an NCAA Division II playoff team, and opened the season with a 2-1 win over Slippery Rock. Edinboro edged the Falcons, 1-0, in the regular season finale.

The Fighting Scots would jump out to quick 1-0 lead on Ashley Mutkus' first goal of the season eight minutes into the match. Edinboro controlled the action for most of the first half, and had a 12-3 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes.

Both teams had excellent scoring opportunities in the first half. Jansen Hartmann's shot hit the crossbar at the 26-minute mark. Notre Dame's Lytia Hart's shot off a crossing pass got past goalkeeper Sarah Baskey in a wild scramble, but a Boro defender headed it out before it went in the goal with seven minutes left in the half.

Notre Dame knotted the score at 1-1 when Jillian Doss took a feed from Natalie Ockunzzi  at 68:27 and beat Baskey from 25 yards out.

Mutkus notched her second goal of the match at 75:26 to give the Fighting Scots a 2-1 lead. The sophomore received the ball from Hartmann on the far right wing and booted the ball into the upper left corner of the net.

Freshman Halle Hammer added an insurance goal for the Fighting scots when she scored her first career goal thanks to an assist from Grace Kereky. Her shot from the top of the box went over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Louisa Rygh at 80:45.

Edinboro ended the match with a 17-5 advantage in shots. Baskey, a sophomore, recorded a pair of saves in her first career start. Rygh had 6 saves.

The Fighting Scots will return to PSAC action next weekend, hosting a pair of contests. Shippensburg visits Edinboro for a 1 p.m. match on Friday, September 11, and Millersville invades Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday, September 12 for a 5 p.m. match.
