Fighting Scots Drop Third Straight Game, 67-53, at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (January 3, 2016) – The Edinboro University women's basketball team continued to struggle with its shooting, hitting a season-low 26.2 percent (17-of-65) in a 67-53 loss to Lock Haven on Sunday afternoon at Thomas Fieldhouse. It was the third straight outing that Edinboro shot under 35 percent from the field. The loss is also the third straight for the Fighting Scots, who now sit at 9-6 overall and 4-5 in the PSAC. With the win, Lock Haven is now 6-7 on the year and 3-6 in the PSAC.
 
Neither team could pull away in a first half which featured 10 lead changes and nine ties. The Fighting Scots would take a slim 26-24 lead at halftime on a Brandy Merritt buzzer beating layup to close out the second quarter. Edinboro entered the locker room shooting 28.1 percent (9-of-32) from the field.
 
The Bald Eagles would grab the lead for good at 31-28 early in the third quarter when Rachael McDaniel nailed a 3-pointer to break the 12th tie of the game. While the final margin was Lock Haven's largest lead of the day, Edinboro trailed by five at 42-37 after three quarters.
 
Katie Fischer's basket early in the final period pulled the Scots to within 44-42. Over the next five minutes, Lock Haven outscored Edinboro, 11-3, to build a 55-45 lead with 3:32 to play. During that stretch the Fighting Scots missed all four of their shots and turned the ball over three times. 
 
Edinboro shot just 24.2 percent (8-of-33) in the second half, including making just 2-of-13 3-point field goal attempts. The Fighting Scots also struggled from the free throw line in the second stanza, shooting just 64.3 percent (9-of-14).
 
Lauren Hippo led Edinboro with 15 points and nine rebounds. Nicole Johnson was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures, scoring 10 points and pulling down seven boards. Fischer had nine points before fouling out for the second time this season.
 
Lock Haven was almost as cold as the Fighting Scots from the floor, shooting 33.3 percent (19-of-57). The Bald Eagles won the game at the free throw line, making 25-of-30. Lock Haven entered the game leading the PSAC in rebounding margin, but the Fighting Scots won the battle of the boards, 48-40.
 
McDaniel led the Bald Eagles with 19 points. Loren Kaiser also scored in double digits, totaling 15 points. Lysa Mealing, the PSAC's leading rebounder, finished with eight boards.
 
The Fighting Scots return home to McComb Fieldhouse on Wednesday, January 6, hosting Bloomsburg at 5:30 p.m.
