EDINBORO, Pa. (January 6, 2016) – Two years ago Edinboro and Bloomsburg squared off in March for the right to play in the Elite Eight. Wednesday's game at McComb Fieldhouse did not bear as much significance, but was still extremely important to the Fighting Scots. Reeling from three straight losses Edinboro handed the Huskies an 84-58 defeat. The win brings the Fighting Scots to 10-6 overall and evened their conference mark at 5-5. The loss, the second in the last three games, puts Bloomsburg at 8-5 overall and 5-4 in the PSAC East.
The Fighting Scots took control of the game early, building a double-digit lead less than seven minutes into the game. A
Lauren Hippo 3-pointer with 6:06 remaining in the opening period sparked a 12-0 run for the Fighting Scots that led to a 20-6 Edinboro lead. Hippo's third 3-pointer of the quarter with 1:02 remaining gave Edinboro a 23-9 advantage. The Huskies added a pair of free throws and a buzzer beater by Morgan Klunk to cut the deficit to 23-13.
Aignee' Freeland swatted a career-high 7 shots That was as close as the Huskies would get to sniffing the lead, however, as the Fighting Scots poured in over 80 points for just the fourth time this season. The Fighting Scots took a 44-25 lead into halftime following a 21-12 second period. The 44 first half points was the second highest total all season. The Edinboro lead grew to as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter when the Fighting Scots scored eight unanswered points to expand the lead to 82-55.
After shooting just 29.7 percent over the three-game losing streak, the Fighting Scots shot 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the field, the second highest percentage all year. Edinboro also shot 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from beyond the arc, led by Hippo's 6-of-13 shooting from three, tying a career-high in 3-pt. field goals and establishing a new career-high in 3-pt. field goal attempts.
Hippo led the Fighting Scots with 21 points, tying a season-high. Hippo has now scored in double figures three straight games after doing so just once in the previous six.
Katie Fischer had a career-high 14 assistsKatie Fischer picked up her third double-double of the season, totaling 18 points and a career-high 14 assists, falling two short of the single game record held by assistant coach
Callie Wheeler. It was a return to form for Fischer after having failed to score in double figures in the past two outings.
Aignee' Freeland also added 18 points and totaled a career-high seven blocks. Freeland moved into sixth all-time with 109 career blocks in the victory. She also pulled down seven rebounds, including a team-high 3 offensive boards.
Michelle Jahn was the fourth Fighting Scot to score in double figures, totaling 10 points and grabbing a career-high eight rebounds.
Edinboro held a 42-32 advantage and the glass and held Bloomsburg to just 30.2 percent (19-of-63) shooting from the field. The Fighting Scots defense held the PSAC's second leading scorer, Mia Hopkins, to 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Hopkins, the conference's fourth leading rebounder was held to a season low three boards as the Fighting Scots did a good job of neutralizing her ability on the glass.
Kristie Costantino was the only other Huskie to score in double figures as she totaled 12 points off the bench.
The Fighting Scots look to continue to turnaround as they hit the road to take on Clarion on Saturday, January 9. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
