EDINBORO, Pa. (October 1, 2016) – A first-half breakaway score by West Chester played difference maker Saturday afternoon as the 20th-ranked Fighting Scots dropped their first home match of the year, 1-0, to the ninth-ranked undefeated Golden Rams. Edinboro stands at 8-2-0 overall with a 7-2-0 PSAC record. West Chester climbed to 10-0-0 in both categories.
The Fighting Scots outshot the Golden Rams, 11-10, and led, 8-4, in shots on goal. Edinboro was called on nine fouls, while West Chester was called on six. Junior goalkeeper
Sarah Baskey collected three saves as she dropped to 8-2-0. West Chester's Alex Srolis finished with seven saves to improve to 10-0-0 in net.
The first half started interestingly enough when West Chester goalkeeper Alex Srolis came out of the box during a scoring chance by Edinboro in the sixth minute. Senior forward
Alex Brown was able dodge Srolis, but the Golden Rams defense was there to make the defensive save. West Chester got on the board when Lexi Brown found a breakaway after a failed clear attempt by senior defender
Shannon Regan in the 28th minute. Brown fed the ball past goalkeeper
Sarah Baskey to Haley Mangiaruga, who slipped in the open-netter to give the Golden Rams a 1-0 lead. West Chester nearly added to their lead when a header by Jenny Bail off a corner kick was blocked away by Baskey in the 30th minute. Edinboro looked for several opportunities to tie the match in the opening session, but to no avail. Junior midfielder
Ashley Mutkus did have a one-on-one scoring chance in the 37th minute, but Srolis deflected away the shot.
The Fighting Scots outshot the Golden Rams in the second half, 5-3, but both sides were held to a scoreless second half. With two and a half minutes to play, Brown found an open lane to shoot, but it met the waiting arms of Srolis. Freshman midfielder
Morgan Hamker then had a one-on-one with Srolis down the left side 24 seconds later, but the senior goalkeeper was there again to divert the shot away. An attempt by senior defender
Jess Sandhas off a corner kick with less than 15 seconds to play accounted for the last shot of the match, with Srolis again there to make the save.
