Women’s Soccer Holds Off Mercyhurst, 3-2, in Second-Half Shootout

ERIE, Pa. (October 5, 2016) – After a scoreless first half, the Edinboro University women's soccer team scored three straight second-half goals and held off a late comeback rally by Mercyhurst for a 3-2 road win over the Lakers Wednesday afternoon. Edinboro extended its unbeaten streak against Mercyhurst to seven matches and improved to 9-2-0 overall and 8-2-0 in PSAC play. The Lakers dropped to 6-4-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the PSAC.

Freshman midfielder Danielle Chatten kicked off the scoring in the 48th minute, when she weaved her way through the box and delivered a dribbler past Mercyhurst goalkeeper Kristen Koch to give Edinboro a 1-0 lead. Senior midfielder Grace Kereky cushioned the Fighting Scots' lead to two with a shot from the left side that found the right of the net past the diving Koch in the 55th minute. Senior forward Alex Brown capped off the Edinboro scoring in the 61st minute when she drove a 25 yard shot from the left side to the upper right corner of the net to give the Fighting Scots a commanding 3-0 lead.

Mercyhurst did not go away quietly, rallying for a pair of goals in the 74th and 78th minute. Maya Bauer put the Lakers on the board after Maggie Hilton averted goalie Sarah Baskey and fed Bauer the easy score to narrow Edinboro's lead to two goals. Freshman goalkeeper Allie Smyth subbed in for Baskey in the 77th minute, but shortly after was given a yellow card after a collision between her Bauer in the box awarded Mercyhurst a penalty kick. Rebekah Craig connected on the penalty kick goal to make the score 3-2, prompting Baskey to come back in net for the Boro. The Fighting Scots held off the Lakers the rest of the way.

Baskey played just over 88 minutes and finished with four saves to improve to 9-2-0 on the season. Koch tallied seven saves as she fell to 6-4-1. Edinboro led 19-11 in shots with a 10-6 lead in shots on goal.

The Fighting Scots' next match will be at home against Bloomsburg as part of Edinboro's homecoming weekend festivities on Friday, October 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
