Brown’s Penalty Kick Proves Vital as Edinboro Blanks Bloomsburg 1-0

EDINBORO, Pa. (October 7, 2016) -- An early penalty kick goal by senior forward Alex Brown made up all of Edinboro women's soccer's scoring against Bloomsburg, but it was enough to push the Fighting Scots to a 1-0 PSAC win on Friday afternoon. Edinboro improved to 10-2-0 overall and 9-2-0 in the PSAC, marking their seventh straight year with 10 or more victories. Bloomsburg dropped to 5-5-2 and 4-5-2 in the PSAC.

Just moments after Brown sang the national anthem before the match, the senior forward was awarded a penalty kick after a Bloomsburg foul at 4:22. She took full advantage for her sixth goal of the year to give Edinboro the early 1-0 lead. Both sides played grudgingly from then on in a match that saw a total of 24 fouls called, which were split evenly between Edinboro and Bloomsburg. The Fighting Scots outshot the Huskies, 10-7, in shots, while both sides each had three shots on goal.

The second half featured a few close calls from Bloomsburg that nearly tied the match. A cross by Emily Potter with 17 minutes to play resulted in a scrum for the ball. The ball got shuffled around and nearly rolled into the net, but it hit the left post, allowing Edinboro to clear the ball. Another scrum came in the final minute. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Baskey made a dive for the ball, but Bloomsburg was able to come up with it. Jessica Supp delivered an open shot at point blank range, but sophomore defender Katie Felitsky came to the rescue for the Boro, sweeping the ball out of the box a mere inches before it crossed the goal line.

Baskey finished with two saves to improve to 10-2-0 on the year. Devon Haviland tallied three saves for Bloomsburg as she fell to 5-5-2.

The Fighting Scots return to action on Tuesday, October 11 when they welcome Gannon to Sox Harrison Stadium at 6:00 p.m.
