EDINBORO, Pa. (October 11, 2016) – Just six days after the Edinboro women's soccer team defeated Mercyhurst, the Fighting Scots hosted Gannon Tuesday night with hopes of completing a season sweep of their two Erie County counterparts. They were partially successful in that notion, battling the Lady Knights through two overtimes to take a scoreless draw at Sox Harrison Stadium. Edinboro moved to 10-2-1 overall and 9-2-1 in the PSAC. Gannon is 6-3-2 overall with a 6-3-1 PSAC mark.
Junior goalkeeper
Sarah Baskey and Gannon's Shannon Differ each played all 110 minutes in a shot-heavy contest that saw Baskey post five saves to Differ's six. Baskey is now 10-2-1 on the year, while Differ stands at 6-2-1. Edinboro outshot Gannon, 17-13, while Gannon led, 6-5, in shots on goal.
The Fighting Scots sported lavender jerseys against the Lady Knights to represent awareness for all types of cancer. Tuesday marked Edinboro's first overtime trip of the season, and their second straight against Gannon. In last year's NCAA Atlantic Region semifinals, the Fighting Scots posted a 2-1 overtime win against the Lady Knights to advance to their first ever NCAA Sweet 16. It was Gannon's second overtime match of the year.
Edinboro and Gannon played to a scoreless first half, but that isn't to say there were no close moments. The Lady Knights had a pair of opportunities in the 16th and 33rd minute, with Taylor Lewis and Nicole Felice firing away the respective shots. But
Sarah Baskey came through each time with saves to keep the match tied. The Fighting Scots too had some chances, including a redirection by senior forward
Alex Brown off a pass from sophomore defender
Abby Gillespie in the 23rd minute that was blocked away at point blank range by Differ.
Gannon nearly took the lead in the 75th minute after Lewis received a pass in the box and worked around Baskey, but her ten-yard shot from the right side hit the right post. A 20-yard shot by sophomore midfielder
Halle Hammer in the 80th minute was blocked away by Differ. On the ensuing corner kick, Differ deflected the cross from sophomore forward
Alex Root and fell down. Edinboro looked to capitalize, but the scuffle inside the box was too much to warrant a clear shot. Brown made a run down the right with junior midfielder
Ashley Mutkus with two minutes remaining. Brown fed an open Mutkus, but her one-on-one opportunity with Differ resulted in another save for the senior goalkeeper to keep the scoreless match intact.
The first overtime session offered the same kind of excitement, but both goalies, again, did their part to keep their team in the match. Edinboro's best effort in that opening session was a 20-yard shot by Brown in the 98th minute that Differ was able to get a hand on and keep clear of the net. Hammer looked to have a breakaway chance in the second overtime in the 104th minute, but was waved off by the officials as an offsides.
Brown finished with five shots and two shots on goal. Hammer had four shots with two on goal, while Mutkus had four shots with one on goal. On the Gannon side, Lewis had five shots and led the match with three shots on goal.
The Fighting Scots have an eight-day break ahead of them, after which they will head down to Slippery Rock on Wednesday, October 19 for a 3:30 p.m. PSAC match against The Rock.
