Edinboro Clinches Seventh Straight PSAC Playoff Berth with 3-1 Win at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (October 19, 2016) – The Edinboro University women's soccer team erased a 1-0 halftime deficit at Slippery Rock Wednesday afternoon to post a 3-1 win over The Rock and clinch a berth in the PSAC Tournament for the seventh straight year. The Fighting Scots improved to 11-2-1 overall and 10-2-1 in the PSAC to continue their best start in school history. The Rock dropped to 8-6-1 and 8-4-1 in both categories. The win also marked the Fighting Scots' first win over Slippery Rock since 2009.

Junior midfielder Ashley Mutkus was responsible for all three of Edinboro's goals on the day. She was credited with assists on the Fighting Scots' first two goals, which were both scored by senior forward Alex Brown, and netted the team's third and final goal. Brown leads the team with 18 points (eight goals, two assists), while Mutkus is second with 17 points (seven goals, three assists).

Edinboro was held to six first-half shots with two on goal, while the Rock fired five shots with two on goal. Dara Demich's score in the 27th minute was the lone goal in the first half that gave Slippery Rock a 1-0 lead at intermission. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Baskey came out of the box to try and stop Demich, but she was able to play the ball past her to take the early lead.

The Fighting Scots evened the match early in the second half on the heels of Brown's 50th-minute equalizer from Mutkus, lobbing one over goalkeeper Kylie Downs to the upper right side of the box. It didn't stay tied for long, as Brown and Mutkus teamed up again in the 56th minute, with Brown's turn-and-shoot to the left side of the net giving the Fighting Scots a 2-1 advantage. And if two assists on the day wasn't enough, Mutkus gave Edinboro some insurance in the 76th minute, finding the opposite lower corner of the net off a pass from junior midfielder Coleen Brodman.

Brown moved into a tie with former teammate Jansen Hartmann for eighth all-time at Edinboro with 26 career goals.

Baskey improved to 11-2-1 in goal for Edinboro, while moving into a tie with Amy Stevens for third all-time with 24 career wins. Downs dropped to 7-4-1 for Slippery Rock.

Edinboro's next contest will be a road match at East Stroudsburg on Saturday, October 22 at 2:30 p.m. in a rematch of last year's PSAC Finals and NCAA Atlantic Region Finals.
