EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (October 22, 2016) – Senior forward
Alex Brown's 104th-minute goal propelled playoff-bound Edinboro to a 1-0 double-overtime win in a much-anticipated PSAC showdown at 13th-ranked East Stroudsburg Saturday afternoon. Brown's ninth goal of the season jumped the Fighting Scots ahead of the Warriors for second place in the PSAC, knocking ESU down to third. The Fighting Scots are 12-2-1 overall and 11-2-1 in the PSAC, while East Stroudsburg dropped its second straight contest to fall to 11-4-1 and 11-3-1, respectively.
Just 11 days prior, Edinboro played Gannon to a scoreless draw, and it appeared they would meet the same fate Saturday. That was until Brown stepped up at 103:57 to deliver her fourth game-winning goal of the season. The senior forward got the ball on the wide right near the corner flag. She beat a defender and then curved a shot to the far side from outside the 18 that sailed past Warriors goalie Jules Harris and gave Edinboro its first win over East Stroudsburg since their 2-1 regular season triumph last year. Brown has scored a goal in six of Edinboro's last eight contests.
The match was hyped as not only a matchup of two of the top three PSAC teams, but a rematch of last year's PSAC Finals and NCAA Atlantic Region Finals, which were both won by East Stroudsburg. The Boro and ESU had already secured PSAC Tournament berths entering Saturday's match. West Chester clinched the number-one seed for the tournament, while fourth-place Kutztown also clinched a berth. Edinboro fell to both teams earlier this year.
The Fighting Scots outshot the Warriors, 16-11, with a 9-6 lead in shots on goal. Edinboro provided all three shots in the overtime sessions and even held a 7-2 lead in shots in the first half. Both sides combined for 19 fouls, 11 of which were called on Edinboro.
Junior goalkeeper
Sarah Baskey recorded six saves as she improved to 12-2-1 on the year. Baskey moved into a tie with Kate Stukbauer for second all-time at Edinboro with 25 career wins. She is one win away from matching her own school season wins record of 13, set in 2015. Harris had seven saves as she fell to 11-4-1.
Brown passed former teammate
Jansen Hartmann to stand alone for eighth all-time at Edinboro in career goals with 27. She stands at tenth all-time with 65 career points. "Brownie" leads the team this season with 20 points on nine goals and two assists.
The Fighting Scots return home on Tuesday, October 25 to begin a two-match home stand to end the regular season hosting Indiana (Pa.) at 6:00 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
