Fighting Scots Climb Out of 0-2 Hole to Defeat Shippensburg in Five Set Showdown

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (October 1, 2016) – For the eleventh time in a row, the Edinboro University volleyball team celebrated a victory on the court. After falling into an 0-2 hole, the Fighting Scots battled back to defeat PSAC Central leading Shippensburg in the fifth set, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon. Saturday's contest marked the sixth straight meeting between the two teams to go to a fifth set, with both teams coming away with three wins apiece. With the win, the eleventh consecutive, Edinboro improves to 11-4 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play while Shippensburg drops to 13-3 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC.
 
Shippensburg opened the afternoon by winning the first hotly contested sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-21. Edinboro responded by dominating the third and fourth set by scores of 25-14 and 25-17, respectively, to force a fifth and final set. Shippensburg jumped out to a quick 8-4 lead in the deciding set, but Edinboro rallied to score the next 5 points to take a 9-8 lead. Clarion responded by retaking the lead at 12-9, but Edinboro tied the match up at 12-12. The two teams traded points before Edinboro took a 15-14 lead and sealed the match with block assists by Latoya Hutchinson and Challen Litwiler.
 
Four Fighting Scots finished with double-digit kills led by senior Victoria Severo. Severo continued her outstanding play as of late, leading the Edinboro attack with a season-high 18 kills. Hutchinson added 13 kills, while Megan Screptock and Litwiler totaled 11 and 10, respectively. Sydney Trathen controlled the flow of the Fighting Scots offense, dishing out a season-high 49 assists.
 
Hutchinson also made her presence felt on the defensive end, totaling five block assists and one block solo. Litwiler paced the Fighting Scots with a season-high 28 digs while Screptock tied a season-best with 21 digs. Trathen contributed 19 digs, while freshman Jordan Van Oss set a new career-high with 18 digs of her own. Van Oss also led the team with a career-high four service aces. Taylor Palowski was the fifth Fighting Scot to finish in double-figures, finishing with 11 digs.
 
Edinboro will receive a week of rest before returning to action. On Friday, October 7, the Fighting Scots will head to California (Pa.) for a 7 p.m. match before taking on Seton Hill on Saturday, October 8, at 1 p.m.
