Edinboro will look to claim the mythical Erie County championship on Saturday while playing at Mercyhurst. The Fighting Scots celebrated Homecoming with a 41-17 win over Gannon. A week earlier, Mercyhurst edged the Golden Knights in overtime, 38-35. More important for Edinboro, the 5-1 start is the best since 2007, and at 2-1 in PSAC West action, the Fighting Scots remained just a step behind California(Pa.). Edinboro is riding an offense that is averaging 43.3 ppg. behind junior QB Jake Sisson (Jamestown, N.Y./ Jamestown). Sisson had his second career 400-yard game as the Fighting Scots rolled to a season-high 572 yards. While Sisson was throwing for 400 yards, Alex Caratelli (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) (13 rec.-188 yds.-2 TD), Ta'Nauz Gregory (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) (10 rec.-136 yds.-1 TD) and Walter Fletcher (13 rushes-135 yards-2 TDs) put up big numbers, as well. The Boro defense continued to improve, limiting one of the top rushing teams in the country to just 82 yards while intercepting four passes and recording six sacks. Mercyhurst comes in with a 2-4 record, 1-2 in the PSAC West, after suffering a 37-25 loss at 19th-ranked Slippery Rock. That's the second loss to a nationally-ranked team this season. The Lakers own a 23-19 win at Kutztown, the current leader in the PSAC East. The contest will feature a teacher vs. pupil theme, with Mercyhurst coach Marty Schaetzle an assistant coach at Bucknell when Justin Lustig was a player there in the late 1990's. Edinboro is looking to snap a three-game losing streak to Mercyhurst.

Edinboro and Gannon renew acquaintances for the first time since meeting last year in the NCAA Atlantic Regional. The Fighting Scots prevailed in that match, 2-1 in overtime over seventh-ranked Gannon, one week after upsetting the then fifth-ranked Lady Knights in the PSAC semifinals by a 3-1 score. Edinboro owns a 10-2-0 overall record and is 9-2-0 in the PSAC, good for third place in the conference. The 10-2-0 record is the best start in school history. The Fighting Scots come in relying on the scoring of Alex Brown and Ashley Mutkus. Brown has six goals and a pair of assists for 14 points, while Mutkus comes in with six goals and an assist for 13 points. Brown ranks ninth in career goals (24) and tenth in career points (59). Mutkus has moved into a tie for tenth place in career goals with 19. Gannon has won its last three matches, all by shutout, to improve to 6-3-1 overall, and 6-3-0 in the PSAC. Head coach Missy Soboleski's team will finally end its five-match road swing, but the veteran coach is hoping the team's winning streak remains intact. The Fighting Scots enjoyed an outstanding weekend, winning on the road in three games at both California(Pa.) and Seton Hill. That made it 13 straight wins after Edinboro opened the season with four losses. Edinboro is on the road on Tuesday for a PSAC Northwest Division matchup with Slippery Rock. SRU is 8-11 overall and 1-5 in league play. The Fighting Scots then return home to McComb Fieldhouse for a weekend set with Clarion (10-8, 4-2 PSAC) on Friday night and against Indiana(Pa.) (13-4, 4-2 PSAC) on Saturday afternoon. A balanced attack features Challen Litwiler with 164 kills, Latoya Hutchinson with 160, and Victoria Severo with 148. Sydney Trathen has 532 assists. Saturday's contest is Edinboro's annual Dig for the Cure Day, with the Fighting Scots dedicating this year's contest for Linda Benkelman, the mother of former Fighting Scot Jenna Benkelman. Linda is currently battling breast cancer.
