Stifling Defense Helps Fighting Scots Open Conference Play with 63-49 Victory at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Edinboro University women's basketball team displayed some stifling defense to the tune of 22 forced turnovers and seven blocks to earn their first conference win of the season, defeating Millersville 63-49 on the road to open PSAC play at 1-0. The Fighting Scots also boosted their overall record to an even 2-2 with the win. Millersville suffered just their first loss of the season, falling to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

Quick hands proved to be the story of the contest as the Fighting Scots picked up 13 steals and turned away seven shots. Nicole Johnson led Edinboro with four steals to go along with her first double-double of the year. The senior forward finished with 13 points and a team-high ten rebounds. First-year Fighting Scot Ciara Rosten was a force down low, blocking four shots and grabbing eight boards. The transfer from Division I UMass added three steals of her own to go along with eight points.

Edinboro came out of the gate hot in the opening period and the Marauders could never recover. The Fighting Scots opened the game with a 12-0 run to take the lead, a lead which they never relinquished. Freshman Michaela Barnes accounted for six of Edinboro's points during the stretch, with Rosten adding four and Michelle Jahn contributing a layup.

The Fighting Scots took a double-digit lead at 23-13 with 7:13 remaining in the first half thanks to a Katie Fischer 3-pointer and Millersville could never cut the deficit to single digits the rest of the way. The Edinboro lead grew to as many as 14 points at 33-19 in the first half, before booming to 24 points with 1:52 remaining in the third quarter.

Fellow senior Katie Fischer joined Johnson in double-figures, totaling 13 points and dishing out seven assists. Jontay Walton came off the bench to score nine points and pick up a couple steals as well. Barnes finished with eight points on 4-of-10 shooting. Senior Maggie Moore provided solid minutes of the bench, as did JaVannah Jackson. Moore finished with four points and two blocks in 13 minutes while Jackson dropped in four points in 10 minutes.

Edinboro was able to overcome a battle against foul trouble to earn the win. The Fighting Scots were whistled for 23 fouls to Millersville's 14. Despite the differential, Edinboro was able to score more points from the charity stripe than the Marauders, finishing 9-of-12 from the line while Millersville shot just 6-of-16.

The Fighting Scots were also able to overcome an uncharacteristically poor shooting performance from beyond-the-arc. After dialing up 13 3-pointers the last time out, Edinboro was 2-of-15 from deep in Saturday's contest. Edinboro was solid from the floor, however, shooting 45.6 pct. (26-of-57) while holding the Marauders to 36.5 pct. (19-of-52) shooting.
The Marauders were led by the duo of Alayah Hall and Aunjel Van Brakle. Hall finished with a game-high 15 points while Van Brakle added 10. Van Brakle also tied for the team-high with seven rebounds, but turned the ball over eight times.

The Fighting Scots are back in action tomorrow afternoon, completing the eastern trip against 3-0 Shippensburg. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Heiges Field House.
