Sisson Scores for 24th-Ranked Edinboro in 52-7 Loss at #6 California(Pa.)

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Jake Sisson scored his fourth touchdown of the season rushing on Saturday, but California(Pa.)'s staunch defense held down the high-powered Edinboro offense on Saturday afternoon at Adamson Stadium. Ranked for the first time since 2011, the 24th-ranked Fighting Scots would suffer a 52-7 defeat to sixth-ranked California(Pa.). The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for Edinboro, as they are now 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the PSAC West. Cal remained undefeated at 9-0 and 7-0, will face Kutztown on Saturday, November 12 in the PSAC Championship Game.

Early on, penalties and turnovers proved the undoing for the Fighting Scots. The Vulcans opened the scoring on their first possession, driving 60 yards on nine plays following a three-and-out for the Fighting Scots. Michael Keir found Tom Greene for a seven-yard touchdown with 9:38 left in the first quarter.

Edinboro would drive from their own 23 to the Cal 31 as Sisson completed five passes, but Aaron Terry stepped in front of a Sisson pass at the Cal 24 to halt the drive. The Vulcans moved to the Edinboro 30 before the defense stepped up, with Marquis Spence sacking Keir on third down. Will Brazill's 47-yard field attempt was wide to the left.

Edinboro knotted the score at 7-7 early in the second quarter after Aaron Rogers intercepted Keir's pass at the Cal 44. The Fighting Scots needed just four plays to reach the end zone. After a 13-yard pass to Jordan Williams, Sisson and Ta'Nauz Gregory combined for a 23-yard pass play to the Cal 8. A Sisson-to-Alex Caratelli pass for four yards put the ball at the four, and Sisson scored on a four-yard touchdown run on a quarterback draw with 11:59 left.

Cal would take advantage of a second Sisson interception to take a 14-7 lead five minutes into the second quarter. Sisson's pass intended for James Clark was tipped into the air by Clark and picked off by Jordan Bowman at the Cal 45. Bowman returned the ball 53 yards down to the Edinboro 2. On the next play, John Franklin II bulled in for a two-yard touchdown run.

That would start a run of 45 unanswered points for the Vulcans. They would add a second touchdown in the second quarter in the waning seconds. After Edinboro was stopped on downs at the Cal 37, the Vulcans took advantage of a pair of key Edinboro penalties.  A 27-yard Keir-to-Garry Brown pass gave Cal a first down at the Edinboro 36. Four plays later, on 4th-and-2, the Scots were called for offsides, giving Cal a first down at the 23. After a Josh Kibbie sack, David Ballew intercepted a Keir pass, but a facemask penalty gave Cal a first down at the 16. Three plays later, Franklin scored his second touchdown on a three-yard run with 16 seconds left in the half for a 21-7 lead.

Cal scored twice in the third quarter. They took the kickoff and went 75 yards on six plays, with Keir throwing 33 yards to Brown for the touchdown with 12:15 left in the quarter. Again, Edinboro had an interception in the drive negated by a penalty.

After a four-and-out, with Edinboro going for it from their own 45 on 4th-and-5, the Vulcans needed six plays to cover the 45 yards. Paul Butler hauled in Keir's third touchdown pass of the day, a five-yarder with 8:21 left in the third period, for a 35-7 advantage.

Brazill booted a 22-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter for a 38-7 lead. The Vulcans would add two more scores, both on spectacular plays by Brown. He turned a short pass into a 59-yard score for keir's fourth touchdown of the day, then took back an Austin Reese punt 53 yards for a touchdown with 8:04 to play.

Edinboro was limited to a season-low 231 total yards, while Cal finished with 415 yards. As usual, the Scots did most of their damage through the air, completing 22 of 55 passes for 179 yards. Edinboro finished with 52 yards rushing. A balanced Cal attack totaled 254 yards passing and 161 yards rushing.

Sisson completed 18 of 46 passes for 145 yards with 2 INTs before giving way to Jack Wallman, who completed 4 of 9 passes for 34 yards. Sisson moved into second place in season passing yards with 3,338.

Jordan Williams paced Edinboro with 6 receptions for 46 yards, while Gregory (53 yards) and Caratelli (37 yards) had four receptions apiece.

One of the least penalized teams in the PSAC this year, Edinboro was guilty of 10 penalties for 90 yards.

Edinboro will now celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, November 12, hosting Cheyney. The Fighting Scots will seek a record-tying ninth win while looking to remain alive in the chase for an NCAA Division II playoff berth. Edinboro was ranked seventh in Super Region One this past week.
