JOHNSTOWN, Pa (February 10, 2016) - It took overtime to settle things Wednesday night, but the Fighting Scots pulled out a 78-76 come-from-behind win at Pitt-Johnstown to remain in third place in the PSAC West. Edinboro ended its three-game losing streak and improved to 13-9 and 12-7 in the PSAC. The Mountain Cats dropped their second straight overtime contest to fall to 14-9 and 10-8, respectively. The Scots split the season series with Pitt-Johnstown, avenging an 80-65 home defeat on January 16.
The major factor in Edinboro's victory came from the free throw line. The Scots connected on 23-of-27 shots from the charity stripe while the Mountain Cats made only 5-of-6. All of Edinboro's overtime points came on free throws, as they shot 11-for-13 from the line in the extra session. Except for a 2-0 lead 12 seconds into the game, the Boro never led in regulation. The Fighting Scots trailed UPJ by as much as 15 points in the contest and began the contest shooting 1-of-16 from the field. They overcame a 10-point deficit with 14:19 left in the second half, with redshirt sophomore
Jaymon Mason hitting a game-tying, turn-around jump shot with 3.3 seconds remaining, to force overtime tied at 67.
In overtime, senior center

The Mountain Cats regained the lead on layups by AJ Leahey and Isaac Vescovi to hold a 71-69 advantage with 3:25 remaining. The Scots then used a 6-0 run, backed by pairs of free throws from Scales,
Je'Land Head, and Mason, to put them ahead for good at 75-71 with 46 seconds remaining in overtime. With Edinboro leading, 77-74, UPJ's Dale Clancy hit two from the charity stripe to bring the Scots' lead down to one point with 10 seconds to go. Edinboro avoided a near-fatal mistake when Clancy stole the ensuing inbounds pass from
Michael Beck, but called a timeout when the Mountain Cats had used all of theirs up, resulting in a technical foul. Mason converted the ensuing free throw with eight seconds remaining for the last point of the contest. UPJ's last-ditch effort, a 3-point attempt by Mosley, fell short of the mark as the Fighting Scots came away with the two-point win.
Mason collected his third double-double and fourth 30-point game of the season with 34 points and 12 rebounds. He shot 13-for-19 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. The PSAC's second-leading scorer now has 138 made free throws for the season, two away from breaking the single-season school record. Senior guard Henri-Wade Chatman finished with 12 points, despite playing 11 minutes in a scoreless first half. The PSAC's fourth-leading scorer is 13
th all-time at Edinboro in career scoring with 1,297 points. The Fighting Scots held a 41-37 advantage on the glass and a 17-9 lead in bench points. Edinboro shot 41.0 percent (25-for-61) for the game, making 5-of-17 3-pointers, while Pitt-Johnstown shot 44.3 percent (31-for-70) and made 9-of-26 from long range.
After a Scales jumper gave the Scots the early two-point lead to begin the game, Edinboro went on to miss their next 15 shots while Pitt-Johnstown jumped out to a 12-2 lead with 14:25 remaining in the half.
Mikael Anderson would end the Scots' silence with a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to eight points at 12-4 with 12:06 left in the opening period. The Mountain Cats held their largest lead of the game at 26-11 with 5:09 to go before halftime. Sheldon Brogdon 3-pointer, to trail UPJ, 31-24, at the break.
The Fighting Scots began the second half with seven straight points, a 14-2 scoring run in all, capped by a Beck 3-pointer to pull the Scots within two points at 33-31 with 18:37 to go in regulation. Edinboro tied the game at 35 on a pair of Mason free throws with 16:45 remaining, but UPJ would jump on a 10-0 scoring run to go back up by double digits, 45-35, with 14:19 left in the half. The Scots once again worked UPJ's lead down to one point with a 12-3 scoring run, with a Mason 3-pointer having the Mountain Cats looking at a 48-47 lead with 11:17 showing on the regulation clock. With the Fighting Scots down, 59-55, with 5:06 left in the second period, Wade-Chatman hit a 3-pointer, followed by Head stealing a pass from Olando King, Jr. on UPJ's ensuing possession, drawing a foul. He would make just one of his two free throws to tie things up at 59 with 4:17 remaining in regulation. When a
Quinn Lee Yaw dunk tied the game again at 65 with 0:38 to go in regulation, UPJ's Dale Clancy found Mosely down low for a go-ahead layup with 13.3 ticks remaining. After an Edinboro timeout, Mason responded for the Scots with a turn-around jumper with 3.3 seconds left to force overtime.
Four Mountain Cats scored in double figures. Nate Snodgrass led UPJ with 21 points. Vescovi and Clancy had 16 points and 13 points, respectively, while Leahey had a double-double with 10 markers and a game-high 16 boards. Lee Yaw, a sophomore forward, tied a career-high with nine boards in his first start since November 22. He missed nearly two months due to injury.
Edinboro returns home to play fifth-place Clarion (9-10) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. for the first of a three-game home stand. A win Saturday will allow the Fighting Scots to clinch both a berth in the PSAC Tournament and a home tournament game.
