CALIFORNIA, Pa. (February 24, 2016) - The Edinboro University men's basketball team clinched the third seed in the PSAC Tournament Wednesday night with a 79-75 win at California (Pa.). The Fighting Scots finished the regular season at 15-10 overall and 14-8 in the PSAC and will host sixth-seed Clarion in the first round of the PSAC Tournament on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse. The Boro also completed its first season sweep of the Vulcans since 2004-05 as Cal ended its season on a ten-game losing streak with a 7-21 overall record and a 4-18 PSAC record.
The last-place Vulcans were looking to earn a win in the last game of head coach Bill Brown's career. Brown announced his retirement earlier this month after 20 years leading Cal and 30 years as a head coach. The Fighting Scots were also forced to overcome a lengthy delay due to a leak in the Convocation Center roof during a heavy rainstorm late in the first half, along with some shaky free throw shooting late in the game.
Cal gave their coach something to smile about after early 3-pointers by Josh Dombrowsky and Daniel Sapp gave the Vulcans a 6-0 lead with 18:44 left in the half. It would be their largest lead of the game. Edinboro responded with seven straight points, aided by a 3-pointer by
Henri Wade-Chatman and a pair of jumpers by
Tommy Scales and
Jaymon Mason, which began a back-and-forth contest for the remainder of the half. The first half saw seven lead changes and the game being tied four times. Edinboro led by as much as five points in the first 20 minutes.
The game was tied at 32 with 1:27 left in the half before the contest was delayed 20-25 minutes due to heavy rain leaking through the roof. The Fighting Scots and Vulcans went to the locker rooms until the storm passed. The two teams would return to play the remaining 1:27 of the first half, take a one-minute break, then play the second half.
With
Michael Beck nailing 3-of-4 free throws, Edinboro led 35-34 at halftime. The Scots opened the second half on an 8-2 run, with six of those points coming from Mason, to widen their lead to seven points at 43-36 with 17:23 left in the game. The Vulcans would not go away, pulling within one point of Edinboro's lead twice before Luka Andjusic's 3-pointer tied the game at 51 with 12:29 remaining.
But it marked the final time this game was tied, as Edinboro responded with a 17-6 run that gave them their largest lead of the game at 68-57 with 8:13 left in the game. The Vulcans worked their way back to one possession of Edinboro's lead three times, but pulled no closer than two points. With the Scots up, 76-68, with 1:41 remaining, Cal pulled to within three points after an Andjusic 3-pointer and a Richardson dunk made it 76-73 with 53 seconds to play. Scales was intentionally fouled on Edinboro's next possession, but split his pair of free throws. Cal answered with Khalil Jabbie finding Richardson down low for a layup to pull them within two points with 24 ticks to go, but it would be the Vulcans' last points of the season. Mason was intentionally fouled, where he missed his first free throw and made his second to give Edinboro a 78-75 lead. Cal's last chance to tie the game, a 3-point attempt by Andjusic, fell short of the mark and into the arms of
Mikael Anderson with 13 seconds to play. Anderson was fouled and split his free throws for the final point of the game.
Mason led all scorers with 28 points, shooting 11-for-16 from the floor, for his 12th 20-point game of the season. He also dished out seven assists. Mason moved into 11
th all-time at Edinboro in season points with 535. The 6'3" redshirt sophomore guard went 4-for-5 from the charity stripe to increase his school season record total to 150 made free throws. Wade-Chatman finished with 17 points and eight assists. The 6'2" senior guard passed former teammate Bryan Theriot for tenth all-time in career points with 1,373 and moved into 19
th all-time with 503 season points. Scales just missed out on his third straight double-double and seventh of the season with 10 rebounds and nine points.
Edinboro held a 38-28 advantage on the glass and shot 50.9 percent from the floor (29-for-57). They were 3-for-10 from behind the arc and 18-for-25 from the free throw line. Cal shot 45.0 percent (27-for-60) from the field, going 9-for-28 from 3-point range and 12-for-19 from the charity stripe. The Vulcans led, 34-14, in bench points.
