SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (March 15, 2016) – The Edinboro women's lacrosse team opened PSAC action on Tuesday with a 10-7 loss at Slippery Rock. While remaining winless against The Rock, the Fighting Scots are still off to a fast start at 4-1, while Slippery Rock improved to 3-1.
SRU was able to edge the Fighting Scots despite an outstanding effort by goalkeeper
Paige Skinner. The sophomore finished with 11 saves as The Rock held a 27-16 advantage in shots. She was particularly effective in the first half when SRU outshot the Scots 16-8.
A low-scoring first half saw the Fighting Scots grab a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the match before trailing 5-2 at the half.
Cydney Hrycko opened the scoring with her 16th goal on a free position shot at 28:40.
Emily Peters scored a free position goal, her 14th of the season, 33 seconds later,
The Fighting Scots would not score again the rest of the half, as The Rock scored the next five goals, the last with just 1:05 left in the half.
Edinboro opened the second half with a goal just 19 seconds to close the gap to 5-3, as
Kasey Thur scored her second goal, assisted by
Anna Purdy. But The Rock scored three of the next four goals to take its biggest lead of the match at 8-4.
Rebecca Martin and
Erin Gordon scored to pull Edinboro within 8-6 with 12:28 to play, but the Scots would not pull closer than that the rest of the way. The two teams exchanged goals, with SRU still leading by a 9-7 margin with just over nine minutes to play, but the only goal the rest of the way came from Slippery Rock with 2:34 remaining.
Purdy was the lone Fighting Scot with multiple points, finishing with a goal and two assists. Kaytlin Callaghan and Erin Wilcox had three goals apiece for Slippery Rock. Jordan Wagner had nine saves.
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, March 19, playing their home opener against Bloomsburg. The match gets underway at Sox Harrison Stadium at 1 p.m.
