EDINBORO, Pa. (March 19, 2016) – The Edinboro women's lacrosse team dug itself an early four-goal deficit against Bloomsburg on Saturday at Sox Harrison Stadium, then nearly came all the way back. The Fighting Scots were unable to complete the comeback, however, suffering a 10-9 loss to the Huskies in their home opener. The loss dropped Edinboro to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC. Bloomsburg improved to 3-2 and is 1-1 in league play.
Bloomsburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead less than eight minutes into the contest before Edinboro could even attempt a shot. Brigid Kyne scored two of those goals, the second giving the Huskies a 4-0 lead with 22:32 left in the first half.
The Huskies would build the lead to 7-2 at one point, that coming with 8:07 to play in the half on a goal by Lindsey Coyle.
Cydney Hrycko scored the first goal for Edinboro off a pass from
Anna Purdy for her 17th goal of the season. That made it 4-1, and
Britney Myers' fourth goal of the year cut the margin to 5-2.
Paige Skinner had nine saves.Emily Peters scored back-to-back goals as Edinboro pulled to within 7-4 with 6:18 to play, but
Blooomsburg's Taylor Turner scored twice to extend the Huskies' lead to 9-4.
Rebecca Martin scored her ninth goal with 17 seconds remaining to make the score 9-5 at the half.
The Fighting Scots turned up the defense in the second half, allowing the Huskies just a pair of goals. The two teams opened the half exchanging scores, with Peters scoring at the 22:18 mark, assisted by Hrycko, before Coyle scored for Bloomsburg at 18:51 to make it 10-6.
Edinboro would run off the next three goals to pull to within a goal at 10-9 with just under eight minutes remaining.
Stephanie Chido accounted for the first goal, her third of the year, assisted by Peters. Peters would assist on the second one, as well, feeding Martin with 10:52 to play. Peters scored the next one herself, her team-leading 18th of the season, off a pass from
Kasey Thur.
With 7:50 remaining, Edinboro had pulled to within a goal at 10-9. Unfortunately, the Fighting Scots' next three possessions would end in turnovers, a problem all day as Edinboro committed 22 turnovers compared to 12 for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg would score an insurance empty net goal with 1:46 remaining just seconds after Edinboro pulled goalkeeper
Paige Skinner. Kyne's third goal of the game gave the Huskies an 11-9 lead, and Bloomsburg came up with the next draw control to run out the clock.
Peters led Edinboro with four goals and two assists, with Martin scoring twice and Hrycko adding a goal and two assists. Turner had three goals and two assists for Bloomsburg, with Kyner adding a pair of goals. Bloomsburg held a 29-20 advantage in shots, with Skinner totaling nine saves and Abbey Burnett four for the Huskies.
Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, March 23 at Seton Hill.
