GREENSBURG, Pa. (March 23, 2016) – The Edinboro University women's lacrosse team's 15-13 PSAC win at 18
th-ranked Seton Hill on Wednesday marked several firsts for the school's eight-year-old program. The victory not only marked the team's first conference win of the year and head coach
Caitlin Formato's first career PSAC win, it gave Edinboro its first-ever win against a nationally-ranked opponent and first-ever win against the Griffins. Seton Hill had won each of the previous four all-time meetings since the Fighting Scots began women's lacrosse in 2009. Edinboro snapped a two-match losing streak to improve to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the PSAC. SHU dropped its sixth-straight contest and first to a non-ranked opponent to fall to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Before the Fighting Scots could celebrate their historic win, they had to stave off a late comeback threat from Seton Hill. Edinboro held its largest lead of the contest at 15-10 with 5:18 left to play before the Griffins used three consecutive goals to draw to within two goals with 2:19 to go in the match. Sophomore goalkeeper
Paige Skinner and the Boro defense stood strong, not allowing another goal for the remainder of the contest. Seton Hill took 35 shots (30 shots on goal) to Edinboro's 30 (24 shots on goal), but Skinner's efforts again proved invaluable as she improved to 4-2 on the year in goal. She tied her career high with 17 saves, which is tied for second all-time in one match by an Edinboro goalie.
In last year's meeting, the 16
th-ranked Griffins jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on their way to a 16-9 victory at Sox Harrison Stadium. They appeared poise to repeat history after two quick goals by Emily Fagan and Mackenzie Kilduff gave SHU a 2-0 lead just one minute, 43 seconds into the contest. Edinboro responded with a
Stephanie Chido goal to cut the deficit in half, but the Griffins shot back with two goals for their largest lead of the match at 4-1 with 22:35 to go before halftime. The celebration would be short-lived, however, as the Fighting Scots took control for the remainder of the half, using a pair of four consecutive goals to take a 9-6 lead at intermission.
The Boro took its first lead when
Emily Peters netted a shot past goalie Meghan Hollar to take a 5-4 advantage with 12:05 left in the opening half. SHU tied things up at five on a Fagan goal just two minutes later. Both sides stood quiet until Edinboro responded with four straight goals again in the final five-and-a-half minutes of the first half, powered by a pair of goals by
Cydney Hrycko and scores from Peters and
Rebecca Martin.
Seton Hill made a goalie change at halftime, replacing Hollar with Hailey Jacobs. Hollar entered the contest allowing 10.3 goals per game. The switch looked to give the Griffins new life at first, as they pulled to within two goals on an Alessandra Nicholas goal with 27:57 left in the match. But Martin and Hrycko picked up where they left off in the first half, each scoring a goal to bring the Boro's lead back up to four goals at 11-7 with 19:59 remaining. Nicholas again helped bring the Griffins to within two goals, netting two consecutive shots to make the score 11-9 with 16:32 to play.
Peters gave Edinboro breathing room with her fourth goal of the contest from a feed by Martin for a 12-9 advantage with 11:21 left to go. After SHU responded on a score from Nellie Phillips just 21 seconds later,
Rachel Olson found the back of the net on a man-up, free-position goal, quickly followed by a goal from
Kasey Thur that saw Edinboro up again by four goals with 6:30 remaining. Hrycko capped the Edinboro scoring with her 22
nd goal of the year, tied with Peters for the team lead, to give the Scots a 15-10 lead.
Martin led all scorers with six points on two goals and four assists. Hrycko netted a match-high five goals, while Peters tallied five points on four goals and one assist. Hollar was hit with the loss as she dropped to 1-6 on the season. Edinboro and Seton Hill each completed 12-of-15 clear opportunities. The Fighting Scots scored on 3-of-5 free position chances, while the Griffins scored on just 3-of-10 chances. SHU held an 18-12 advantage in draw controls and caused nine turnovers to the Scots' six.
Edinboro now turns its attention to a home PSAC match against sixth-ranked Lock Haven on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
