EDINBORO, Pa. (March 22, 2016) – Edinboro University first-year head football coach
Justin Lustig has announced the majority of his coaching staff for the upcoming season. It includes three returnees from last year's squad – long-time assistant coach
Wayne Bradford, along with former Fighting Scots
Jack Corey and
Joe Wanson – along with four newcomers.
"We have added some extremely high quality coaches to our staff and, more importantly, to our Edinboro community," stressed Lustig. "Our staff will bring a wide range of experience and success from all levels of football. They will not only be great teachers of football for our players, but will also serve as great role models and mentors for our team off the field. We are certain that this staff will continue to increase the energy and excitement around 'Boro football!"
Lustig's first coaching staff at Edinboro, along with responsibilities, includes:
Bobby Babich -- Defensive Coordinator/ Defensive Backs
Chris Limbach -- Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
Wayne Bradford -- Inside Linebackers/Director of Development
Joe Wanson -- Wide Receivers
Jack Corey -- Offensive Line
Kellen O'Neill -- Running Backs/Special Teams Coach
Dr. Keith Lustig -- Outside Linebackers
Here's a breakdown on the four new coaches to the staff:
Bobby Babich (defensive coordinator/defensive backs) served as the assistant secondary coach for the Cleveland Browns the last three years, working with the safeties, in particular, a year ago. During that time, he has worked with the likes of All-Pros Joe Haden and T.J. Ward, along with Tashaun Gibson and Donte Whitner. Before joining the Browns, Babich spent two seasons with the Carolina Panthers as a defensive assistant (2012) and administrative assistant for the coaching staff (2011). He assisted with day-to-day operations and worked with the nickel backs. Prior to joining the Panthers, Babich served as secondary coach at Eastern Illinois University from 2007-10. In 2009, Babich's secondary was instrumental in helping the Panthers rank in the top 20 nationally in takeaways as Rashad Haynes and C.J. James each earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors. Originally from Tulsa, Okla., Babich began his coaching career in 2006 as a graduate assistant at Kent State University. He worked with a secondary that featured future NFL Draft picks Usama Young (2007 third round, New Orleans) and Jack Williams (2008 fourth round, Denver). Babich was a four-year letterman as a cornerback at North Dakota State University. He was a two-time Academic All-Conference honoree and led the team in interceptions as a senior. His father, Bob, has coached in the NFL since 2003 and served the last three years as the defensive coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Lustig Comments: "We are extremely fortunate to have Coach Babich as our defensive coordinator. He will bring a combination of various aptitudes to our staff. His experience, energy and expertise will positively influence our team and our coaches. Coach Babich's family will also be positive addition to the Edinboro community." Chris Limbach (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks) joins the Edinboro staff after serving as the offensive line coach at Division III Centre College since 2012. He was also the recruiting coordinator. Under Limbach's leadership, the offensive line enjoyed tremendous success both as a group and individually at Centre. Centre's offensive line paved the way for 1,000-yard rushers the last three seasons, first by Harry Meisner in 2013, then by All-Southern Athletic Association running back Nolan Coulter in 2014 and 2015. Prior to that, the Colonels' last 1,000-yard rusher was in 1995. Limbach and the offensive line helped Centre set single-season offensive records the last three years, as well. Last year, The Colonels set a new program record for yards in a season (4,991) and total offense per game (499.1) in 2015, breaking records set the previous two years. Centre finished with an 8-2 record last season, averaging a conference-leading 235.1 rushing yards per game and 37.9 ppg. The Colonels rushed for at least 200 yards in five games. Limbach coached six first team All-SAA honorees, including a year ago along with a second team honoree. He came to Centre with coordinating experience at the Division II level at Oklahoma Panhandle State University, where he was the associate head coach/ offensive coordinator in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate assistant at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette where he worked with the offensive line from 2008 to 2010. While at Lafayette, the Ragin' Cajuns finished seventh in the nation in rushing offense with 263.7 yards per game. That same year, they finished 13th in the country in total offense, averaging 449.2 yards per game. The 2009 Cajun offensive line gave up only 13 sacks on the season. Limbach also spent time on the staff at Eastern Illinois, his alma mater. While at EIU, the Panthers won back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference championships in 2005 and 2006. They participated in the FCS National Playoffs for three seasons from 2005-2007.
Lustig Comments: "I've been fortunate to experience Coach Limbach's growth as a college coach from his days as an undergrad student assistant at Eastern Illinois to his current appointment here at Edinboro. I have always been impressed with Chris's work ethic, organizational skills, and offensive knowledge. I am excited to see our offense under Coach Limbach's direction." Kellen O'Neill (running backs/special teams) rejoins the Edinboro program after playing for the Fighting Scots from 2011-13. A native of Edinboro and former standout at General McLane High School, he played defensive back as a freshman at Slippery Rock before transferring to Edinboro for his final three seasons. He played wide receiver and quarterback for the Fighting Scots, catching 10 passes for 89 yards as a junior and 13 passes for 92 yards as a senior. After graduating from Edinboro in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in Communications, O'Neill served as an offensive assistant at FCS member University at Albany in 2014 and 2015. He was a member of a coaching staff that saw the Great Danes record the biggest turnaround in college football, as they went from 1-11 in 2013 to 7-5 in 2014. He assisted with offensive game planning, opponent scouting reports, and coached scout team defense.
Lustig Comments: "We are very excited to welcome back Coach O'Neill to the Edinboro community. It's always great to bring back alumni. Kellen has already been an instrumental part of the coaching transition. Kellen has a bright future in coaching and we are very glad to have him back in the 'Boro."
ustig Comments:
Dr. Keith Lustig (outside linebackers) is no stranger to
Justin Lustig. The elder Lustig is the father of Edinboro's first-year head coach. A renowned orthopedic surgeon while practicing in Erie and Sharon, he has now turned his attention to coaching football. He started his coaching career as an assistant for Kenny Walker at General McLane High School in the late 1980's and early 1990's. He moved on to Cathedral Prep in the mid-1990's, eventually working his way up to defensive coordinator under head coaches Mina George and John Berchtold. Lustig coached multiple defensive positions from 1998-2001 on Blair Hrovat's staff at Allegheny College. He moved on to coach the linebackers at Christopher Newport University from 2001-06, helping the Captains make the NCAA Division III playoffs five out of six seasons. He moved back to Pennsylvania after that, where he continued his medical career at the Sharon Regional Health System, while also assisting on Jim Wildman's staff at Sharon High School from 2013-2015.
Lustig Comments: "I am very excited to be working with my father again. I was fortunate to work with my father early in my career at Christopher Newport University. During those times we were a part of three NCAA playoff teams together. Coach Lustig (Senior) will bring a vast array of experience and knowledge both on and off the field." Head coach
Justin Lustig is expected to announce another addition or two to the coaching staff in the near future.
