Formato Picks Up Win in Debut as Head Coach as Edinboro Prevails 18-6 at Alderson Broaddus

PHILIPPI, WVa (March 4, 2016). – Edinboro's Caitlin Formato didn't have to wait long to pick up her first win as a head coach. The Fighting Scots opened the 2016 campaign with an 18-6 win at Alderson Broaddus in Formato's first game as a head coach. While it was the lidlifter for Edinboro, the Battlers suffered defeat for the first time and is now 2-1.
 
Edinboro jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than three minutes into the game and held a 5-0 lead with just over ten minutes into the contest. Hrycko accounted for the first three goals, with Purdy assisting on the first and third goals and Peters the second. Purdy scored the next two goals for the 5-0 lead with 19:32 left in the first half, with Erin Gordon assisting on both.

Alderson Broaddus closed the match to 5-3 with three straight goals, two coming on free position goals.

The Fighting Scots would answer with the final four goals of the half to grab a 9-3 lead at intermission. Peters scored her first goal of the season at 9:08, and less than a minute later Hrycko scored her fourth goal off an assist from Rebecca Martin, last year's leading scorer. Purdy and Martin scored again before the end of the half.  

Edinboro would extend its lead in the second half, scoring five of the first six goals to grab a 14-4 advantage. Peters opened the half with a goal just 41 seconds in for a 10-3 lead. The Battlers scored at the 21:04 mark to end a string of five straight Edinboro goals, but the Scots then tacked on four more in a row.

Hannah Fitzgerald scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Martin at 20:18, and 38 seconds later Peters scored on a free position goal for a 12-4 lead. Gordon, a sophomore, notched her first career goal, and Haleigh Wright scored at 17:15 for a 14-4 lead. Martin assisted on both goals.

Alderson Broaddus would score cut the lead to 14-6, but the Fighting Scots ended the game with the final four goals

Purdy paced the Fighting Scots with 4 goals and 3 assists for 7 points. Hrycko and Peters added four goals and an assist. Martin, a senior who led Division II in assists per game a year ago, opened the year with six assists to go with a pair of goals for eight points. Britney Myers, Fitzgerald, Gordon, and Wright each scored a goal apiece.

Edinboro held a 28-23 advantage in shots. Paige Skinner started in goal and recorded eight saves while playing just over 51 minutes. Mackenzie Waterston finished up with a save in nine minutes. AB held a 9-1 advantage in free position shots, but Skinner was up to the challenge. The Battlers had 23 turnovers, compared to 17 for Edinboro.

The Fighting Scots return to action on Sunday, March 6, playing at West Virginia Wesleyan.
