BUCKHANNON, W.V. (March 6, 2016) -- Two days after its 18-6 season-opening win at Alderson Broaddus, the Edinboro University women's lacrosse team again used a blend of high-scoring offense and strong defense Sunday for an 18-3 win at West Virginia Wesleyan. The win marked the Fighting Scots' third straight 2-0 start and first under first-year head coach
Caitlin Formato. Edinboro improved to 4-0 in the all-time series against the Bobcats, who dropped to 0-3 overall.
The Fighting Scots outshot the Bobcats in the first half, 21-7, and 15-6 in shots on goal. Edinboro scored the first seven goals of the match and eight of the first nine on its way to an 11-2 halftime advantage. The Boro led, 6-0, less than six minutes into the match, powered by three goals by
Anna Purdy for her second straight hat trick and a pair of consecutive goals by
Cydney Hrycko, both coming in a span of 20 seconds (25:58 and 25:38), and one from
Emily Peters. Hrycko then picked up her second consecutive hat trick, as well, off an assist by
Rebecca Martin to put the Scots up, 7-0, with 18:22 to go in the half. The Bobcats then scored two of the next three goals to cut the deficit twice to six goals, but they were unable to get any closer. Hrycko would score two more times in the first half to bring her goal total to five while Martin scored on a free possession and assisted on a goal by Peters with ten seconds to play in the half to lead by nine goals at halftime.
Edinboro goalie
Paige Skinner blocked away four shots in the opening period while the Fighting Scots defense held the Bobcats to just seven first-half shots and forced ten turnovers.
Hrycko opened the second half with her game-high sixth and final goal of the contest to give Edinboro its first double-digit lead at 12-2 with 27:20 left to play. Martin followed by earning herself a hat trick with two consecutive goals to give the Scots a 14-2 advantage with 21:32 to play in the match. Kim Lubic scored what would be West Virginia Wesleyan's final goal of the contest on a free possession at 14-3 with 15:18 to play. Shortly after, Skinner made way for
Mackenzie Waterston to finish out the remaining ten minutes of the match in net. Skinner finished her day with six saves and three goals allowed in 50 minutes as she improved to 2-0 on the year. Waterston held the Bobcats scoreless in the final ten minutes, registering one save. Goals by
Britney Myers,
Stephanie Chido,
Haleigh Wright and
Madison Temple closed out the scoring to give Edinboro its largest margin of victory since 2014.
Martin led all scorers with seven points on three goals and four assists. Purdy added six points on three goals and three assists, while
