KUTZTOWN, Pa. (April 1, 2016) – The Edinboro University women's lacrosse team saw its overall record even at 5-5 with a tough 11-10 setback at Kutztown on Friday afternoon. The Fighting Scots are now 1-5 in the PSAC, while the Golden Bears improved to 6-5 overall and 2-4 in conference action. Edinboro had won the previous four meetings against Kutztown.
The two teams battled back-and-forth all afternoon, but the Fighting Scots were never able to grab the lead. The match was tied on three occasions, with Kutztown holding its largest lead at 8-5 early in the second half.
Edinboro continued to roar back every time Kutztown looked to pull away, starting at the beginning of the match when the Golden Bears opened a quick 2-0 lead less than six minutes into the contest.
Edinboro answered with a piar of goals in just over a minute – a free position goal by
Rachel Olson, followed by
Rebecca Martin's 18th goal of the season off an assist from
Cydney Hrycko to knot the match at 2-2 with 23:01 left.
Kutztown would score the next two goals for a 4-2 lead, and after Martin scored her second goal, Kutztown answered with a goal at 8:58 for a 5-3 advantage. Hrycko notched her 26th goal off a pass from Martin at 7:40 to cut the lead to 5-4. The two teams exchanged goals once again, with Hrycko's second goal of the match, assisted by Olson, making it 6-5 with 5:28 to play. Kutztown would take a 7-5 lead at the half when Lauren Schmidt scored with just three seconds remaining.
Cydney HryckoThe Golden Bears opened the second half with a goal at 28:33 to take their biggest lead of the contest at 8-5. Again the Fighting Scots rallied, scoring three straight goals to tie the match at 8-8.
Anna Purdy accounted for the first goal at 26:43, assisted by Hrycko, followed by
Emily Peters' goal at 23;55, with
Alexa Healy assisting.
Erin Gordon's free position goal made it 8-8 with 22:24 remaining.
Kutztown regained the lead at 9-8 on Makayla Bowman's goal at 18:38, but Edinboro tied it at 9-9 on Peters' goal, assisted by Olson, at the 14:53 mark. Emily Smith scored the eventual game-winner for Kutztown at 11:18 for a 10-9 lead, and Lauren Schmidt built the margin to 11-9 with 5:05 to play.
Edinboro would attempt one last comeback, as Peters scored her 27th goal of the season, thanks to a pass from Purdy, with 2:55 remaining. Kutztown would gain the draw control and Edinboro never saw the ball again.
The Golden Bears held a 28-24 advantage in shots, with
Paige Skinner again strong in goal with 10 saves for the Boro. Jen Bergey had 11 saves for Kutztown.
Peters led the Fighting Scots with three goals, with Hrycko adding two goals and two assists and Martin contributing two goals and an assist. Olson had a goal and two assists. Sarah Gabrielle led Kutztown with four goals, aided by Lauren Huggins with three goals and three assists.
Edinboro is right back in action on Saturday, playing at East Stroudsburg in a 2 p.m. match.
