Edinboro’s Second-Half Rally Falls Just Short in 15-12 Defeat to Indiana (Pa.)

EDINBORO, Pa. (April 14, 2016) – Despite an early 7-0 deficit and trailing by as much as eight goals with 20:09 remaining, the Edinboro University women's lacrosse team rallied valiantly against 16th-ranked Indiana (Pa.) on Thursday, cutting the deficit to as close as three goals. The lead would be too much to overcome, however, as the Fighting Scots fell, 15-12, to the PSAC-opponent Crimson Hawks at Sox Harrison Stadium. Edinboro dropped to 6-8 and 1-8 in the PSAC, while IUP improved to 10-5 and 8-2, respectively.

The Crimson Hawks began the match by netting seven consecutive goals for a 7-0 lead with 23:12 left in the first half. Amy Weinberg tallied five assists and one goal in that span. The first half saw a combined 18 goals, as the Fighting Scots responded by cutting the deficit to as much as six goals three times in the half to trail, 12-6, at intermission. Rebecca Martin and Anna Purdy each collected a pair of first-half goals.

IUP netted two straight goals to start the second half, extending their lead to eight goals, their biggest lead of the contest, with 27:28 left to play. The Edinboro squad held the Crimson Hawks to just one goal the rest of the contest, as sophomore goalkeeper Paige Skinner registered seven second-half saves. The Fighting Scots reeled off six of the final seven goals of the contest, including the final five goals. Alexa Healy netted two goals in the closing half, while Madison Temple, Purdy, Martin and Emily Peters each contributed a goal of their own. Peters' score with 1:11 remaining cut IUP's lead to three goals, but it would be the last goal of the contest.

Healy and Purdy each led Edinboro with four points, with both tallying three goals and one assist. Purdy added to her team-leading total with 53 points on 32 goals and 21 assists, while moving into a tie with teammate Cydney Hrycko for third all-time in career goals (94). She is second all-time in career points (152) and career assists (58). Martin finished with two goals to add to her all-time leading total with 203 career points on 74 goals and 129 assists. She is also first all-time in career assists.

Skinner finished with 10 saves as she fell to 5-7 on the year. Angela Lontoc collected six saves as she climbed to 8-5. Lontoc split time in goal with Sarah Knotts and Haley Stamera.
