Foul Trouble Plays Spoiler in Edinboro’s 13-10 Grudge-Match Defeat at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (April 16, 2016) – A series of bad breaks spelled trouble for Edinboro women's lacrosse on Saturday, as a foul-plagued Fighting Scots squad ended up on the short end of a 13-10 closely-contested PSAC match at Shippensburg. Despite nine lead changes, five goals by Cydney Hrycko and a 13-save performance by Paige Skinner, Edinboro lost its third consecutive match to fall to 6-9 and 1-9 in the PSAC. The Raiders improved to 4-10 and 1-10 in PSAC play.

The Fighting Scots were called on 46 fouls, with eight of the Raiders' goals coming on free positions. In all, Shippensburg had 16 free position opportunities, while Edinboro converted one free position goal on three tries. Shippensburg outshot the Boro, 38-24, and won the draw control battle, 20-5.

The first half saw seven lead changes, with neither side holding more than a one-goal lead throughout the first 30 minutes. Skinner collected nine of her 13 saves in the first half. Hrycko's fourth goal of the contest gave Edinboro a 6-5 lead with 1:38 to play in the half, but Shippensburg quickly strung together a pair of free-position scores to hold a 7-6 lead at intermission.

The second half continued with the trend of one-goal leads to start, but would only feature two lead changes. Trailing, 8-7, Hrycko and Anna Purdy each tallied a woman-up goal to give the Fighting Scots a 9-8 lead with 21:40 to play. It would be their only lead of the half, however, as the Raiders swung the lead back in their favor following a score by Kyra Shank and a free-position goal by Amanda Frank. Purdy answered with her third and final goal to tie things up at 10 with 16:45 left, but Shippensburg pulled away with three unanswered goals, including a free-position score by Morgan Stone that broke the tie.

Hrycko added to her team-leading season total to 39 goals. She now stands alone for third all-time with 99 career goals, while moving into fourth all-time with 128 career points (29 assists). Purdy finished with four points on three goals and one assist, bringing her team-leading season points total to 57 points (35 goals, 22 assists). Rebecca Martin had a pair of assists, adding to her all-time leading career assists tally with 131 and her all-time leading career points total with 205.

Skinner dropped to 5-8 on the season in goal, while Ally Frymoyer collected six saves to improve to 4-10.
