EDINBORO, Pa. (April 20, 2016) – The Edinboro women's lacrosse team treated the fans at Sox Harrison Stadium to a pair of firsts on Wednesday afternoon. The Fighting scots recorded their first-ever win over Gannon by a 9-6 score, marking the first home victory of the season. In addition, with the win Edinboro matches its school record for wins in a season with a 7-9 record. The Fighting Scots are 2-9 in the PSAC. Gannon fell to 6-10 overall and 3-8 in league play.
Edinboro received a stellar effort in goal by
Paige Skinner, along with
Cydney Hrycko becoming the third Fighting Scot to reach 100 career goals. It marked the final home appearances for Hrycko,
Rebecca Martin,
Hannah Mong,
Molly Campion,
Anna Purdy, and
Britney Myers.
Paige SkinnerEdinboro opened the scoring on the first of back-to-back goals by
Anna Purdy, sandwiched by a Gannon goal. The Lady Knights would grab a 3-2 lead with 17:31 remaining in the first half on a pair of goals by Ashley Mozingo.
The Fighting Scots responded with five straight goals, three courtesy of Hrycko. The first came off an assist from
Rebecca Martin and was the senior's 100
th career goal with 15:22 remaining.
Erin Gordon gave Edinboro the lead for good at 4-3 with 14:57 left in the half. Hrycko then scored twice, the first a free position goal which moved her into second place in career goals, and the second with 8:58 to go, her 42
nd of the season and 102
nd of her career.
Martin would contribute the fifth consecutive goal with 7:31 left in the half to give the Fighting Scots their biggest lead of the match at 7-3. Gannon made the score 7-4 at the half on Becky Hilker's goal with 1:27 remaining.
The second half featured just four goals. Gannon accounted for the first two to make things interesting at 7-6. Leilani King accounted for the first less than two minutes into the half. The two teams would battle without a goal for over 13 minutes after that before Mozingo found the back of the net for her third goal of the match.
After a drought of over 26 minutes, Edinboro finally beat Gannon goalkeeper Kat Martinelli with 11:18 remaining, with senior
Hannah Mong scoring her first goal of the season and the 16
th of her career. She gave the Fighting Scots some breathing room at 8-6.
Rachel Olson gave the Scots an insurance goal with 33 seconds to play.
Cydney HryckoWhile Hrycko was contributing three goals and Purdy a pair, Skinner was stopping shot after shot in goal. The sophomore registered 10 saves as Gannon had a 25-20 advantage in shots.
Edinboro will wrap up its first season under head coach
Caitlin Formato on Saturday at seventh-ranked West Chester.
