Edinboro Overcomes Early Deficit, Takes 11-8 Win at Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING, W.V. (April 5, 2016) – The Edinboro University women's lacrosse team overcame an early 2-0 deficit and used a high-shooting offensive attack for an 11-8 win at Wheeling Jesuit Tuesday afternoon. The Fighting Scots outshot the Cardinals, 32-21, and pushed away a late Wheeling Jesuit rally to improve to 6-6 overall with a 1-6 PSAC record. Edinboro ended its four-match losing streak, while halting the Cardinals' three-match win streak. Wheeling Jesuit dropped to 7-5 overall with a 2-0 record in the Mountain East Conference.

The Fighting Scots also improved to 4-0 all-time against the Cardinals, having beaten them every year from 2012 to 2014 by a combined score of 53-13.

Edinboro found itself down early after a pair of goals by Elizabeth Hales and Jessie Tufnell gave Wheeling Jesuit a 2-0 lead with 20:33 left in the first half. Despite this, the first half proved to be a low-scoring affair, as only six goals were scored in the opening session. But it would be Edinboro that would score the remaining four goals to take a 4-2 lead at intermission. Cydney Hrycko put the Scots on the board with a goal to cut the deficit in half with 13:22 left in the first half. Alexa Healy netted her second goal of the year to tie things up nearly two-and-a-half minutes later. Emily Peters scored to give the Boro the lead for good with 4:22 left in the half, while Anna Purdy connected on a woman-up goal to close the first-half scoring with 44 ticks to go.

The Cardinals refused to go quietly, cutting Edinboro's lead to one goal twice in the closing 30 minutes. Hales found the back of the net again just 26 seconds into the half to pull Wheeling Jesuit within one goal. After Haleigh Wright and Rebecca Martin each responded with goals for Edinboro to take a 6-3 lead, the Cardinals again pulled to within one goal with scores by Markie Wright and Hales. That would be as close as Wheeling Jesuit would get, as the Fighting Scots reeled off four straight goals to take their largest lead of the match at 10-5 with 11:05 to play. Despite three consecutive goals by the Cardinals to draw to within two goals of Edinboro's lead with 7:37 remaining, the Scots held tight, not allowing another goal. Hrycko capped the scoring with her team-leading 31st goal off a feed by Rachel Olson with 1:17 left in the game.

Hrycko led the Fighting Scots with five points on three goals and two assists. Anna Purdy collected three points on two goals and one assist, while Martin tallied a goal to bring her career record scoring total to 200 points (72 goals, 128 assists). Martin leads the team this season with 47 points on 27 goals and 20 assists. Hales led all scorers with six points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Paige Skinner registered six saves to improve to 5-6. Cardinals goalie Marie Austin dropped to 7-5.

The Fighting Scots return home on Saturday, April 9 with a PSAC match against Millersville at 1:00 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
