NCAA Unveils Men’s Tennis Round of 16, Edinboro to Play Armstrong State

NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Bracket

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 11, 2016) – The NCAA announced its 16-team field for the Division II Men's Tennis Championship in Denver, Co., with Edinboro landing a first-round meeting with Southeast Region I champion Armstrong State. The match is set to take place on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots, who captured their third straight PSAC championship and second NCAA Atlantic Regional II title in three years, stand at 23-3. The Pirates, who are based out of Georgia and members of the Peach Belt Conference, are 24-2.

The men's tennis championships are part of the NCAA's ninth annual Division II National Championships Festival hosted by Metro State University-Denver and the Denver Sports Commission from May 16-21, 2016. 76 qualifying teams and 20 qualifying individuals will represent their institutions by competing for national championships in men's and women's golf, women's lacrosse, softball, and men's and women's tennis.

Head coach Lee Underwood leads Edinboro to its second national championship appearance in three years, with his 2013-14 team reaching the round of 16, as well. However, Underwood will be the only Fighting Scot making that return trip. Edinboro accomplished becoming the winningest team in school history in 2015-16 with a roster made entirely of freshmen and sophomores. After breaking the previous school wins record of 19 set by the 2013-14 squad, the Fighting Scots downed West Chester, 5-0, in the PSAC semifinals and defeated Mercyhurst, 5-1, in the PSAC finals to win their third straight league crown.

Edinboro hosted the NCAA Atlantic Regional II Championship for the first time in program history, earning the number-two seed in the region. Sunday's sub-regional finals pitted the Scots against Mercyhurst for the third time in less than a month, with Edinboro completing the three-match season sweep of the Lakers in the form of a 5-3 victory. Sophomore Vitor Albanese earned wins in both the number-one singles and doubles matches, while freshman Kevin Mboko rallied from a one-set deficit in singles to give the Boro its fifth and decisive win to clinch the Atlantic Regional II title.

Albanese, who won the PSAC Singles Championship and placed second at the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Singles Championship, was named the PSAC's Athlete of the Year for the second straight year after winning both the Freshman of the Year and Athlete of the Year awards in 2015. He leads the team with a 31-3 singles mark. Newcomer Camilo Moncayo captured the Boro's fifth consecutive Freshman of the Year honor, while Underwood earned his third straight Coach of the Year award and fourth in the last five years.

Sophomore Danny Fernandez was named the PSAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player after going 2-0 in doubles with freshman partner Mateus Santos and 1-0 in singles during the two-day tournament. Fernandez and Santos own a team-leading 22-8 doubles record as Edinboro's number-two duo.
